TOP-10 Most Unusual Easter Eggs in Games and Consoles
Many developers add Easter eggs to their games that refer us to famous works, specific people, or even memes. Some of them look quite unusual. In this article, we have collected the strangest Easter eggs in our memory.
Meowing after each successful hit in Counter-Strike 2
Counter-Strike 2 is the latest version of the cult Valve shooter. Despite a number of innovations, it retains the gameplay of the original game, where you kill quickly and without the possibility of resurrection during the round. However, you can dilute the harsh atmosphere by having cats meow after each hit on enemies. To do this, enter the command:
- alias SOUNDcat01 «play sounds\ambient\animal\cat_01;»
- alias SOUNDcat02 «play sounds\ambient\animal\cat_02;»
- alias SOUNDcat03 «play sounds\ambient\animal\cat_03;»
After that, all that's left is to «bind» "X" «SOUNDcat01», where X is any key in the game.
Half-naked men in Hitman: Blood Money
Almost all the jokes that appear in the games of the Hitman series can be classified as black humor. But among them there are also simply strange situations that are difficult to explain from a logical point of view. For example, during the ninth mission in Blood Money, called «Till Death Do Us Part», you need to eliminate the father and the groom right at the wedding. But if you shoot a special lucky coin during the ceremony, a crowd of men in underwear will come running to you and applaud. Apparently, this is how rednecks in the American outback have fun.
Aggressive cows in Diablo 2
Back in the days of the first Diablo, a rumor spread among players that if you click on a cow a certain number of times, you can open a portal to a secret level. In fact, this is a story in the spirit of a cheat code for a naked Sonya Blade from the first Mortal Kombat. However, the developers from Blizzard appreciated the joke and played it up in the sequel.
After you complete the final quest in Act 5 of Diablo 2, you need to return to the Vagabond camp from the beginning of the game and put the Tome of Town Portal along with Wirt's Leg into the Horadric Cube. This will open a passage to a new location. There, dozens of aggressive cows are waiting for you, walking on their hind legs and attacking enemies with spears.
Have you ever been scared by scary Easter eggs?
The Morgue in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
When you meet The Sorrow in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, you will encounter the ghosts of all the fighters you stabbed or shot during the game. There is a similar moment in Skyrim. However, you can only get to it using the console command player.moveto 0001A683. This will take you to a separate room where the bodies of all the NPCs you killed with a specific name lie.
Scary faces in the Game Boy camera interface
Although the Game Boy is a portable console with a black and white screen, a full-fledged camera was released for it in 1998. It allowed you to take pictures with a resolution of 128 × 128 pixels. This feature was used in some games that were developed specifically for this camera. However, the idea was not developed further, and in 2002, the production of such devices was discontinued.
The Game Boy Camera interface has a Run item. If you click on it, scary faces will appear on the console screen and the inscription Who are you running from? Even now, this Easter egg looks sinister and evokes associations with horror films. It is difficult to imagine how scared the children of the 90s were. However, such jokes are often found in Nintendo games.
Nightmare sounds, a scary face of the main character and a mention of the devil in Sonic CD
In the 90s, the Sega Mega Drive was considered a console for a more adult audience than the NES or SNES. However, the Sonic series was aimed at players of all ages, including children. It was all the more surprising to see an Easter egg in Sonic CD that causes fear. To do this, you need to run a sound test and enter the combination FM no. 46, PCM no. 12, DA no. 25. After that, we saw the main character with a scary grimace and heard ominous music. Moreover, in the American version of the game, the word «majin» was heard, which is translated from Japanese as «devil». In fact, this is just a mispronunciation of the name of the developer Masato Nishimura. However, this did not stop fans of fan theories — they interpreted the mention of Lucifer in their own way. Interestingly, the error made the initially creepy Easter egg even more ominous.
Kraken in Assassin's Creed 2
Starting with Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the developers began to rely on mythology — they offered the main character to fight the Minotaur, the Cyclops and the Gorgon Medusa. However, in the first parts of the series, Ubisoft adhered to historical realities. Therefore, the meeting with the Kraken in the canals of Venice turned out to be truly unexpected.
In Assassin's Creed 2, during a visit to the Visitazione cache after killing the fleeing guard, you will see a door with an emblem in the form of a skull. You need to open it, and then pull the lever. In the same place, Ezio will begin to look closely at the water. If you do nothing for about thirty seconds, the Kraken will float to the surface. However, it does not pose a danger to the main character.
Sounds in the main menu while the original Xbox is running
Xbox is the first console from Microsoft, which went on sale 23 years ago. If you turn it on and leave it in standby mode, after a while it will start making strange sounds. Mysterious whispers will be combined with scary music and chants straight from horror films.
Rock band concert in the first Gothic
At the beginning of the second chapter in the Old Camp, you can get to a performance by the folk band In Extremo. Frankly speaking, a modern concert does not fit well with the fantasy style of the game. But the music is simply excellent. It is worth noting that this band recorded the soundtrack for Gothic. It is not yet known whether a similar show will appear in the upcoming remake.
It should be noted that the Russian version of Gothic from 1C did not feature the rock band's performance. But in the original German edition and the localization from Russobit-M, it was present in full.
John Romero's Head in Doom 2
This Easter egg is known among fans of Doom, but considering that the second part of the series is 30 years old, many may not know about it. To see it, in the final level of the game, during the battle with the Icon of Sin, you need to enter a cheat code that allows you to walk through walls. This way, you can get to the secret part of the level where the severed head of John Romero is located. If you shoot it, the level will be considered completed.
John Romero is a level designer and tester for all id Software games up to and including the first Quake. The idea to place the guy's head belongs to his colleagues. This is how they wanted to joke about the programmer. And they succeeded — John was simply shocked. Later, it was he who suggested leaving the Easter egg in the final version of Doom 2.
