The Most Mysterious Video Game Characters

When used correctly, understatement can be a great artistic device. For example, video game developers sometimes add characters with mysterious backstories and ambiguous motivations to their games. This article is dedicated to such heroes and heroines.

Ada Wong from the Resident Evil series

Ada Wong has appeared in many parts of the Resident Evil series. Within the framework of certain mini-campaigns, we can even see what is happening from the point of view of a female special agent. At the same time, players know little about her. In particular, Miss Wong often betrayed her employers, so there is a feeling that she was always pursuing her own vague goals.

We also don't know what Ada did before her first contact with Albert Wesker, or what she did from 1998 to 2004 and from 2005 to 2010. We are not told her origins or even her real name. Even her feelings for Leon raise questions. Perhaps it was simply beneficial for the girl that the guy cope with his tasks, for example, get out of Raccoon City, and then save Ashley Graham from crazy cultists.

But this mystery gives Ada a special charm. The mysterious femme fatale is a truly interesting image by the standards of the gaming industry.

G-Man from the Half-Life series

A man in a formal suit with a suitcase in his hand has been following Gordon Freeman since the first Half-Life. Later, we learned that he can be stopped using the Vortigaunts' abilities or a special camera used by the Combine. In Half-Life 2: Episode Two, we were told that Eli Vance knew this man from somewhere, and from Half-Life: Alyx, we learned that he can predict the future.

But the G-Man's true goals remain unclear. We also know nothing about the mysterious employers who wanted Gordon Freeman to go against the Alliance and overthrow their occupation government. Meanwhile, today it is difficult to imagine Half-Life without this mysterious character. He endowed the events with a special meaning and created the illusion of involvement in something grand.

Mysterious stranger from the Fallout series

This character appeared in the numbered parts of the Fallout series as an ally of the protagonist, who shot at his enemies. In order for this to happen, you need to activate a special perk.

In New Vegas we met a wandering guitarist Lonesome Drifter. From his conversations it became clear that he is the son of the Mysterious Man. For example, the guy has a special revolver that the mysterious man used. Moreover, when you take it out of the holster, the same musical theme associated with the stranger will start playing. But it is possible that Lonesome simply made up this story.

In Fallout 4, detective Nick Valentine took up the case of this mysterious shooter. He found out that the character appeared from 2161 to 2287 in various corners of the United States of America, including the Capital Wasteland, the Commonwealth, the New California Republic, and Shady Sands. And thanks to Fallout 76, we learn that the stranger was active back in 2103. We are talking about either a group of people or a long-lived ghoul who does not have noticeable scars on his face. The second option seems unlikely to us.

Strange Man from the Red Dead Redemption duology

Chronologically, the action of the second Red Dead Redemption takes place before the first. It is there that you can see a mysterious portrait of a Strange Man. It is in an abandoned hut, which is located in the Bagell Edge area. During the game for Arthur Morgan, the picture will be unfinished, but gradually it will begin to become more and more detailed, as if someone is finishing it. If you visit this house when you take control of John Marston, the portrait will be completed. According to the guy, the man in the picture is clearly watching us.

A strange man added a touch of horror to Red Dead Redemption 2

In the same hut, you can find a mention of Herbert Moon, as well as notes with stories about the cholera outbreak in Armadillo. One of the strangers will say that it was a strange man in a top hat who sent an epidemic to the inhabitants of the city. And Herbert Moon himself can be found with his portrait. But the owner of the store just liked the picture, and he decided to keep it for himself.

You can meet the Strange Man in person in the first Red Dead Redemption. He will give John tasks that affect his honor. The man answers all questions evasively and does not give specific answers. At the same time, he can predict the future. And when Marston tries to kill him, the hero will not succeed — the gentleman will simply disappear into thin air.

There are different theories about who the Strange Man is. Most likely, it is death itself in the flesh. This is what one of the strangers says. In addition, John's last meeting with the mysterious man will take place exactly where Marston will later be buried.

Flemeth from the Dragon Age series

The identity of this witch from the wilds is shrouded in mystery. Many stories and Ferelden legends are dedicated to her, but no one can say for sure which of them is true. If you collect all the stories about her into one, it turns out that the witch has been alive for more than 700 years. It is possible that we are talking about different women.

Flemeth is incredibly powerful and clearly pursues her own goals, and she often uses her own daughters to achieve them. For example, Yavana took up the awakening of great dragons, and Morrigan became pregnant by a Grey Warden so that their common child would become a vessel for the soul of the Old God Urthemiel. And Flemeth, like a devil, sometimes offered people deals. She is ready to help those in need, but as a result, they often lose more than they gain. And if the witch did not like the offer, she simply killed the one who came to her.

In Dragon Age: Inquisition, we saw a meeting between Flemeth and Solas, whom she called the Dread Wolf. Their dialogue and its outcome gave rise to many fan theories. The most interesting of them sounds like this: Flemeth is actually the same prophetess Andraste, who is worshiped by the inhabitants of Thedas. Of course, such thoughts cannot be called a reliable source. But this is the point of mysterious characters — they motivate people to look for hidden meanings.

Ahti the Janitor from Control and Alan Wake 2

We meet some video game characters in a variety of locations, including those where it is unsafe to be. A striking example is the merchant from Resident Evil 4.

However, Ahti from Control is a special case. For example, his portrait hangs in the office of the bureau director, and the employees express dissatisfaction with the fact that he appears everywhere, but they can do nothing about him. There are hints in the game that this janitor is the very first paranormal entity that the organization encountered, which is a demon and the personification of the Oldest House itself. His superpowers include the ability to read minds. There were attempts to find out the origin of Ahti and understand his true goals, but they were unsuccessful.

We also meet the janitor in Alan Wake 2, which takes place in the Control universe. He can be seen in the Dark Place, Bright Falls and Wateree. It is believed that Ahti lives in a local nursing home. He guides Alan Wake and Saga Anderson along the right path and warns them about things they shouldn't do.

Among the fan theories about who this janitor is, there is an assumption that he is the Finnish god of the sea, whose name is Ahti. This is hinted at by the former director of the bureau, Zachariah Trench, the image of the world tree on one of the columns in the Oldest House, as well as his friendship with Thor and Odin from the group "Old Gods of Asgard". Moreover, this hypothesis is combined with information about the paranormal nature of the janitor. Such entities can take different forms depending on where they are. In ancient times, Ahti was revered as a deity, and in modern times he is considered a mysterious assistant of the Federal Bureau of Control.

Mike Toreno from GTA: San Andreas

Initially, we knew Mike as the leader of the Loco Syndicate. During an open clash with this organization, CJ blows up a helicopter where its leader was supposed to be. However, Toreno was not on board. Later, he tells the protagonist that he is an employee of a government agency, but which one exactly remains unknown. At the same time, his employers are so powerful that they can get a person out of prison or significantly complicate his life behind bars. When you complete all of Mike's assignments, Sweet will actually be released.

But Toreno's assignments do not correspond well to his statements about working for America. Among them are the delivery of contraband cargo, an attack on CIA helicopters, the hijacking of a Hydra fighter, an attack on ships that are called spy ships, and the disabling of a SAM air-to-air missile system. Mike's true goals remain unclear. There is an assumption that he is somehow connected with enemies of the United States from other countries. But at the same time, they clearly have influence on various internal structures of America. Of course, the impunity of the main characters of the GTA series is a game convention. But it is hard to believe that the hijacking of a combat aircraft and an attack on the secret service can go unnoticed. This can be explained by the fact that Toreno's patrons allowed CJ to avoid dfurther problems. Mike himself disappears without a trace after the deal is completed.
