Nintendo recently held a new Direct presentation dedicated to the upcoming racing arcade game Mario Kart World. The developers showcased gameplay, and we've gathered all the details that have been revealed.
Details:
- The game will feature an open world consisting of various interconnected locations, including cities, plains, deserts, and the ocean. Each region has its own tracks. Some of the tracks shown in the video include Mario Bros. Circuit, Crown City, Salty Salty Speedway, Starview Peak, Boo Cinema, Toad's Factory, Peach Beach, and Wario Shipyard. In addition to new tracks, classic ones will also be present but promised to be "reimagined";
- Races can take place both day and night;
- Both old drivers and newcomers will be available. The video showed Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Goomba, Spike, Cow, and more;
- All characters and vehicles have different characteristics, allowing for unique combinations;
- Two main racing modes were shown: Grand Prix and Knockout Tour, with up to 24 drivers participating, a first for the series;
- On the tracks, opponents are not the only threats. Players may encounter shooting vehicles and other obstacles;
- In Grand Prix mode, various cups are available, each with four tracks. Winning all of them unlocks a special bonus track;
- In Knockout Tour mode, players embark on a journey from one end of the world to the other. To avoid being knocked out, players must reach checkpoints in time;
- As before, bonus items can be used during races. New items shown include a coin shell (activating it spawns additional coins on the track), an ice flower (can freeze opponents), hammers (block opponents), and a mega mushroom;
- To avoid hostile attacks while driving, players can use a feather to jump;
- For newcomers, assist features are available and can be configured in the menu, such as smart steering;
- During the gameplay demonstration, a Penguin (driver) was shown. The video references a long-standing meme from Super Mario 64, where players return a penguin chick to its mother, receive a star, and then throw it off a cliff. This trick became iconic among fans and was parodied many times. In the video, the Penguin falls off a cliff several times, which is an obvious nod for fans;
- Special outfits can be unlocked in the game, obtainable at parking lots located in the open world;
- Some new tricks include a boost jump and rewind;
- There are time trials where players can compare their results with other gamers and compete against their "ghosts";
- Players can customize race rules;
- Up to 24 players can now compete in two, three, or four teams;
- The video also showed modes like "Balloon Battle" and "Coin Runners";
- Gamers can explore the in-game world in free ride mode, traveling to any area;
- During free ride, in-game snapshots can be taken. The photo mode allows for pose changes and frame settings;
- Up to four people can play on one console in split-screen mode;
- Both local multiplayer and wireless play are available;
- During online play, gamers can view the map to find out where their friends are located and arrange meetups in various spots;
- Joint snapshots can be taken in photo mode;
- Built-in voice chat can be used to communicate with other players;
- Nintendo Switch 2 camera owners can display their reactions in real-time during races. Icons with players' faces will be displayed above racers.
