Bethesda has released a remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. But is the remastered classic worth buying?

The rumors were confirmed — Bethesda held a presentation where they announced the release of the remaster Oblivion. The game has really been transformed and began to look like a modern project. But is there any point in buying it in 2025? You will find the answer to this question in our article.

In a nutshell about The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

The fourth part of the Elder Scrolls series was unable to gain the popularity that Morrowind and Skyrim had. The release version turned out to be controversial — it was criticized for its small open world, a lot of boring quests and harsh auto-leveling, due to which all enemies increased their level at the same time as the player. This game is also the source of the meme about paid horse armor. In 2006, such DLCs seemed unusual and strange, especially in AAA projects that were sold at full price.

But despite all the downsides, Oblivion is a full-fledged numbered part of The Elder Scrolls with all the distinctive features of the series: freedom of action, thoughtful and variable gameplay, as well as interesting lore that unfolds as you progress. Separately, it is worth praising the Shivering Isles add-on, where we find ourselves in the kingdom of the Daedric Prince Sheogorath. This is a truly vivid and unusual gaming experience, for which it is worth launching the full edition of the game.

What is the Oblivion remaster

Thanks to the new Unreal Engine 5, the graphics really look much better. Moreover, the developers assure that all the details of the environment were recreated manually, and not using neural networks, as it was in GTA: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition.

However, the changes affected not only the appearance of the game, but also the gameplay. For example, opponents began to react more actively to your blows and hits with long-range weapons. If earlier Oblivion was sharpened for the first-person view, and the view from the back seemed not very convenient, now it can be comfortably played with an over-the-shoulder camera. In addition, the main character's sprint and swimming speed have increased significantly, which will allow him to move faster and easily leave the battle if necessary.

It is also worth noting that NPCs now have more unique lines — phrases will be repeated much less often than before. And some mini-games, such as lockpicking, have been redesigned to meet modern standards.

The Deluxe version of the remaster includes the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles add-ons, as well as additional content in the spirit of armor and weapons. The regular edition is sold without DLC. The game was released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Note that the remaster is available completely free of charge to subscribers of the Game Pass services.

Thanks to the quality of the graphics, it seems that this is not a remaster, but a full-fledged remake

Is it worth buying the reissue of The Elder Scrolls 4

If you love The Elder Scrolls, are waiting for the sixth part or remember with nostalgia the times when you played Oblivion, we strongly recommend that you check out the remaster. Fans of role-playing games who missed the fourth The Elder Scrolls can also try it. Keep in mind that a full playthrough can take up to a hundred hours.

If for some reason you don't like Bethesda's open worlds and its approach to presenting the plot, the Oblivion reissue will definitely not change your attitude towards the series. In this case, you can safely pass by.
