What Warhammer Fans Will Be Playing Soon: All the Major Announcements from Skulls Showcase 2025
Fazil Dzhyndzholiia
The season of game showcases and conferences has officially begun. Yesterday’s Skulls Showcase broadcast brought us a slew of new details about upcoming Warhammer 40,000 titles, as well as updates for existing games — both from the grimdark future and the fantasy realms of Warhammer. We've gathered all the key highlights in this article.
New RPG from Owlcat Games
Let’s start with the biggest news. Owlcat Studio announced its next RPG titled Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. This marks the developer’s second dive into the Warhammer 40K universe, following Rogue Trader.
Dark Heresy is based on the tabletop roleplaying game of the same name. Players will take on the role of an Imperial Inquisitor, tasked with rooting out heresy, investigating dark cults, and uncovering conspiracies on a war-torn planet. While there may be opportunities to travel beyond, the focus this time is on deeply developing a single world — unlike the galaxy-spanning scope of Rogue Trader. The player’s mobile base of operations is a smaller ship reminiscent of the Ebon Hawk from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The game draws inspiration from titles like Pentiment and Disco Elysium. Investigations offer no “correct” answers — players must gather clues and form their own conclusions. False accusations may result in innocent people being executed.
Dark Heresy features turn-based combat, similar to Owlcat’s previous work, but with major changes. These include a revamped cover system and a new morale mechanic that causes characters or enemies to panic — fleeing the battlefield or even firing on allies under pressure.
Romance options will also be available. However, no exact release date has been announced yet — hopefully the wait won’t be long.
Remasters of Classic Games
One of the most anticipated and beloved announcements is the remaster of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and its expansions. Originally released in 2004, Dawn of War is still considered one of the greatest real-time strategy games ever made and a gold standard among Warhammer 40K adaptations. It was one of the last jewels of the golden age of classic RTS games.
With Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War — Definitive Edition, developer Relic aims to modernize the classic without losing its soul. That means a “respectful remaster” approach, preserving atmosphere and gameplay. Key upgrades include 4K resolution, updated textures, improved lighting and reflections, extended camera distance, and a 64-bit architecture for better stability. No release date has been revealed yet.
Have you played Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War?
In addition to Dawn of War, the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is also getting a remaster. Titled Master Crafted Edition, it will launch on June 10. The remaster supports 4K resolution, features upgraded textures and character models, a modernized control scheme, and a completely redesigned UI. It also includes all previously released DLC and enhanced stability on current systems. Notably, the game will be available on PC and Xbox Series X/S, but for some reason not on PS5.
Boltgun Sequel and Free Spin-Off
Set for release next year, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is a sequel to the fast-paced retro FPS inspired by ’90s shooters. You’ll once again play as Ultramarine Malum Caedo on his crusade against the forces of Chaos. The sequel will introduce new weapons, upgraded abilities, and formidable enemies like Bloodletters and Juggernauts. Expect new, unexplored corners of the Warhammer 40K universe. The developers also promise a branching narrative where player choices impact the story.
To tide fans over, a surprise spin-off titled Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun — Words of Vengeance was released. It’s free on Steam. The twist? You kill enemies by quickly typing their names — a quirky and fun mechanic.
Mechanicus 2 Details
New information has surfaced about Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2, the sequel to one of the best Warhammer games to date — often described as “XCOM in the Warhammer universe.” The original stood out for its tactical gameplay and atmospheric soundtrack blending electronics with Gregorian chants.
Mechanicus 2 features two fully fledged campaigns: one for the techno-religious Adeptus Mechanicus, and one for the ancient Necrons. Each offers a distinct narrative perspective on the central conflict. Players will manage resources, construct and upgrade outposts, and make decisions on the strategic map that directly impact tactical missions.
A significant third party also enters the scene — the Leagues of Votann. These “space dwarfs,” introduced in the tabletop game in 2022, worship advanced AI and boast high-tech equipment. Their exact role in Mechanicus 2 remains a mystery, so it’s unclear whether they’ll be a playable faction or NPC mercenaries.
By the way, starting yesterday and until May 26, the first Mechanicus game is free to play on Steam.
New Content for Existing Games
Skulls Showcase also revealed that Blood Bowl 3 will get a new Khorne team, and later this year Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector will receive an expansion featuring the Black Legion faction. In a surprise reveal during the event, Vermintide 2 dropped a brand-new level.
Meanwhile, the developers of Total War: Warhammer 3 showcased a teaser for the upcoming Tides of Torment DLC. A YouTube description slip-up revealed that the expansion will feature not only Slaanesh demons and Norsca, but also High Elves.
Also notable: on June 23, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will introduce a brand-new playable class — the Arbiter. Picture a Warhammer version of Judge Dredd, complete with a cybernetic attack dog. Amusingly, the very next day — June 24 — Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will receive the Lex Imperialis DLC featuring the same class. Quite the coincidence.
And finally, on June 26, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will receive its PvE Siege mode, where players must fend off endless waves of enemies.

In short, Warhammer fans won’t be bored this year or the next. And who knows — if Amazon’s TV and film adaptations succeed, we might see a surge of popularity that brings even more grimdark games our way.
