A classic-style Fallout? A handheld Xbox? What might be revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase

Recently Sony held its State of Play livestream, kicking off the season of June game showcases. Several more are on the way, with the most important being Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Games Showcase. We've already covered what might be announced at SGF, and now it’s time to speculate about what Xbox might have in store.

June Showcase Schedule:

  • Summer Game Fest 2025 — a two-hour presentation by Geoff Keighley, replacing E3. Starts June 6 at 2 PM PT;
  • Day of the Devs — an online indie game showcase. Starts immediately after Summer Game Fest;
  • Wholesome Direct 2025 — a showcase of cozy and heartwarming indie games. Starts June 7 at 9 AM PT;
  • Future Games Show: Summer Showcase — a presentation of indie and AA games featuring over 40 trailers. Starts June 7 at 1 PM PT;
  • Xbox Games Showcase 2025 — Microsoft’s big summer event, highlighting numerous AAA titles. Starts June 8 at 10 AM PT;
  • The Outer Worlds 2 Direct — an in-depth look at Obsidian Entertainment’s new RPG. Starts immediately after Xbox Games Showcase 2025;
  • PC Gaming Show 2025 — a presentation focused on PC games. Starts June 8 at 12 PM PT.

What we’re almost guaranteed to see

Microsoft has officially announced that right after XGS, there will be a dedicated presentation for The Outer Worlds 2 — Obsidian’s RPG, expected to release later this year. Most likely, the stream will also reveal the exact release date. In the meantime, you can read everything we currently know about The Outer Worlds 2.

We’re also expecting a trailer or gameplay demonstration of the new Fable. This is one of Microsoft’s most promising projects: it’s being developed by Playground Games and includes several former developers from The Witcher series — for example, the lead combat designer. According to multiple leaks, the Fable reboot reportedly plays a lot like The Witcher 3, which should be exciting for many fans.

Recently, insider reports suggested that Microsoft has indefinitely delayed its own handheld Xbox console, which was originally planned for 2027. However, this rumor doesn’t affect the new version of ASUS’s ROG Ally, developed in collaboration with Xbox. There's a strong chance this mysterious handheld PC will be shown during the Xbox Games Showcase — images of the device have already leaked, and it's supposedly launching later this year.

What might be shown

Let’s now look at projects that could appear during the Xbox Games Showcase — but without any solid confirmation.

According to several leaks, a remaster of Fallout 3 is in the works, styled similarly to the recent The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Could we see a trailer or teaser? It’s possible, but keep in mind that Bethesda’s Todd Howard has said multiple times that he prefers to shorten the window between a game’s announcement and its release. It wouldn’t be surprising if a remastered Fallout 3 is announced the same day it launches — just like Oblivion Remastered — so don’t hold your breath for a trailer just yet.

One game we are more likely to see is Clockwork Revolution — a steampunk first-person RPG by inXile Entertainment, the studio behind the Wasteland series. It’s been a long time since we've heard any updates, so now would be the perfect time for the devs and Microsoft to break the silence.

A major highlight of the showcase could also be Everwild. Many may have forgotten about it entirely — it was first revealed back in 2019. It’s being developed by Rare, the studio behind Sea of Thieves. In 2020, the project’s creative director left Rare, and news dried up. But according to recent leaks, after several reboots, Everwild is now in great shape and has restored Microsoft’s confidence in it.

Other leaks suggest that State of Decay 3 is set to release in 2026. If true, it would make sense for it to appear at this showcase. Likewise, the reboot of Perfect Dark could return — last year’s impressive trailer indicated the game is well into production.

There’s also reason to believe we might see The Witcher 4. Developers recently revealed a tech demo using Unreal Engine 5, clarifying it wasn’t gameplay — just an engine showcase. But we may finally get to see real gameplay during Xbox’s presentation, where CD Projekt often likes to reveal its titles.

We might also hear updates on major Microsoft franchises. A teaser for the next Halo installment wouldn’t be out of the question — it’s been almost four years since Halo Infinite. Plus, there’s a chance we’ll get a fresh trailer for Gears of War: E-Day.

Wishful Thinking

Finally, let’s indulge in some fantasy about the most unlikely but exciting announcements.

There’s speculation online that Microsoft might release a remaster or remake of the original Fallout, or even a brand-new CRPG-style entry in the franchise. We do know that inXile is working on a second, unannounced game in addition to Clockwork Revolution. Could it be Fallout-related? After the success of Baldur's Gate 3, Microsoft may have realized there’s still high demand for CRPGs. Still, this is pure wishful thinking — no reliable insiders have said anything about it.

Of course, we’d love to see The Elder Scrolls 6. But the truth is, development on Starfield only wrapped up recently, so TES6 likely isn’t ready to show. And again, Todd Howard has been adamant about not revealing Bethesda titles too early.

Sadly, it’s unlikely that Microsoft will announce a new full-fledged next-gen Xbox console either. Most insiders believe both Microsoft and Sony will launch more powerful hardware by the end of 2027, so any news on that front probably won’t surface until 2026 at the earliest. Still, maybe we’ll get a codename or a short teaser — who knows?

***

While we can’t predict all of Microsoft’s surprises, one thing’s for sure: the Xbox Games Showcase is bound to be exciting. The publisher has acquired so many studios in recent years, it practically guarantees a packed event.

The showcase airs this Sunday — June 8 at 10 AM PT.
