At gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, Polish studio CI Games presented the first trailer for Lords of the Fallen 2, a soulslike set in a dark, god-forsaken fantasy universe. According to the developers, the project is being created taking into account the criticism of players.

In this article, we will recall Lords of the Fallen (2023), because the project has been seriously improved since its release, and its final version was significantly influenced by the opinions of the players.

Briefly about the Lords of the Fallen series

Lords of the Fallen 2, despite the name, will be the third game in the series. The original Lords of the Fallen was released in 2014 and became the first soulslike project in history. It introduced several new mechanics that complemented the genre. However, the main difference between the game and FromSoftware's creations was its advanced graphics.

Lords of the Fallen (2023), which became a reboot of the series, also contained latest visual technologies. This game was created on the basis of one of the early versions of Unreal Engine 5. The development of technologies provided by the engine was only gaining momentum at that time, which negatively affected the technical component of the project. However, the authors promptly corrected all the errors and regularly releasing patches.

As a result, a year and a half after the release, an updated version of the game Lords of the Fallen 2.0 — Definitive Edition was released. This large-scale update became the final touch in working on the errors.

Lords of the Fallen (2023) Rework

The mechanics of transition between two dimensions — Axiom and Umbra — and the use of the "Umbral Lamp" became the main feature of the game.

All locations were created in two versions corresponding to these dimensions. The player could use the "Umbral Lamp" to move from Axiom to Umbra at any time, where are the unique enemies and rare loot.

An original concept. However, not everyone liked its implementation. In the Umbra, the player faced an endless stream of additional enemies, which became more numerous the longer you stayed in this dimension. Such mechanics led to sharp changes in difficulty, and also interfered with exploring locations.

It took the developers a long time to fix this flaw, but in the end they were able to find the perfect balance. And the aforementioned patch 2.0 fixed the last remaining minor problems with animations and the combat system.

So what can you expect?

The changes that were made as part of this large-scale work on errors will undoubtedly affect Lords of the Fallen 2. The developers claim that the game will have an optimal difficulty level at start. It is also known that special attention is paid to the plot component of the sequel. As the authors of the project say, they want to tell a "gripping story in an accessible language."

Lords of the Fallen 2 will be released on PC (exclusively on the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
