Year after year, the horror genre proves its consistency, with standout releases arriving on a regular basis. Fans always have something on the horizon, whether it’s big-budget AAA titles or inventive indie projects. 2026 looks set to continue that trend, with studios lining up a wave of promising, spine-chilling games — all of which we’ve collected in this roundup.

Reanimal

  • Release date: February 13, 2026;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2;
  • Co-op: yes.

A third-person co-op horror game from the creators of the Little Nightmares series. Reanimal clearly builds on that legacy while expanding and refining the established formula.

In the new project, two players take on the roles of a sister and brother trying to escape an island overrun by monsters. The experience is built mostly around linear levels filled with puzzles, stealth segments, and sudden chases by ravenous creatures. Co-op is the core focus of Reanimal: many challenges require precise coordination and synchronized actions, which can be difficult to pull off in tense moments when you are trying not to become a meal for a massive beast.

Notably, the developers have abandoned the classic 2.5D perspective in favor of a free, dynamic camera to give the game a more cinematic feel.

Resident Evil Requiem

  • Release date: February 27, 2026;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2;
  • Co-op: no.

Without a doubt, the most anticipated horror game of the year — and arguably one of the biggest games of 2026 overall. According to rumors, Resident Evil Requiem has been in development for around six years, and fans should expect the most ambitious entry in the franchise in quite some time.

Interestingly, Requiem appears to follow in the footsteps of Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 6 in its attempt to strike a balance between horror and action. It is known that the game will feature two protagonists. Missions starring the new heroine, Grace Ashcroft, lean more heavily into pure horror, with limited resources and stealth-focused segments — such as the trailer scene where she hides from a massive monster. The second playable character is the fan-favorite Leon Kennedy. His sections are closer in spirit to Resident Evil 4: Leon knocks enemies out with spinning kicks and makes active use of melee weapons like axes and chainsaws.

It is still unclear how seamlessly Grace’s episodes will mesh with Leon’s levels, but hopefully this time Capcom will manage to find the right balance.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake

  • Release date: March 12, 2026;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2;
  • Co-op: no.

A remake of the iconic Japanese horror game originally released on PS2 back in 2003. For many years, the horror genre could be loosely divided into the school of Resident Evil and the school of Silent Hill, and the original Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is a textbook example of the latter. Combat encounters are kept to a minimum, while the focus is placed on exploration, puzzle-solving, and gradual narrative раскрытие. The game builds suspense through atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and disturbing imagery.

The developers of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake promise improved visuals and sound, modernized controls, and a more refined camera mechanic — a core element of the series that allows players to defeat ghosts.

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S;

There can never be too many games inspired by the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a first-person horror game built on Unreal Engine 5, where players explore the infamous R’lyeh — the submerged prison city of Cthulhu. Naturally, the protagonist must also grapple with madness, a central theme for projects of this kind.

In terms of tone and structure, the game is partly reminiscent of SOMA, but with a stronger emphasis on action and the signature aesthetics of Lovecraftian horror: tentacles, fish-like creatures, mutants, and non-Euclidean architecture.

An official game based on the popular film series. Halloween is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror title set in the timeline of the first movie — Haddonfield, Illinois, circa 1978. Players can take on the role of the unstoppable killer Michael Myers (who, notably, can temporarily turn invisible to appear unexpectedly), or play as survivors. Fans of Dead by Daylight should definitely keep an eye on this one.

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival

  • Release date: 2026;

  • Co-op: no.

A first-person adventure based on the cult film franchise Hellraiser. A joint project by Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games, developed with the direct involvement of writer Clive Barker. The game is positioned as the first full-fledged standalone adaptation of Hellraiser rather than a crossover or spin-off. Doug Bradley, who portrayed Pinhead in most of the films, returns to reprise his iconic role.

The story of Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is rooted in the canon of the film series. At the center of the narrative is a man named Aidan, whose lover Sunny is taken by the Cenobites — malevolent followers of the dark god Leviathan — after she opens the Genesis Configuration, a new variation of the infamous Lament Configuration puzzle box. Aidan must descend into a nightmarish realm where the real world intertwines with the dimension of the Cenobites.

Directive 8020

  • Release date: 2026;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: unknown.

The fifth entry in The Dark Pictures anthology and the first sci-fi horror game from Supermassive Games. Directive 8020 takes the familiar formula into outer space and openly draws inspiration from horror films like The Thing and Prometheus.

The story begins aboard the scout ship Cassiopeia, sent to find a new home for humanity among the stars. Things go wrong after catastrophic hull damage causes the crew to crash on the exoplanet Tau Ceti f. As paranoia grows, the survivors discover an alien organism capable of perfectly mimicking humans.

Players must carefully manage limited resources and make difficult decisions that directly determine who lives and who dies. As in other games by the studio, no character is safe from death at any point in the story. New mechanics include support devices such as scanners and flashlights that can attract enemies, as well as tools designed to help escape or stun alien threats.

The Sinking City 2

  • Release date: 2026;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: no.
System requirements

The Sinking City 2 moves away from the formula of the previous entry, reimagining the series as a full-fledged survival horror experience set in a compact open world. The mechanics emphasize resource scarcity and constant tension. Inventory management, crafting, and supply balancing are deliberately restrictive, forcing players to thoroughly search their surroundings and make tough decisions about how to use the loot they find. At the same time, the levels are not oversaturated with items and are designed so that players never feel completely helpless and can fight back against monsters — a crucial aspect of the survival horror subgenre.

ONTOS

  • Release date: 2026;
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S;
  • Co-op: no.

A first-person sci-fi thriller from Frictional Games and a spiritual successor to SOMA. The events of ONTOS take place at the abandoned Samsara outpost — a repurposed lunar hotel. The protagonist is a woman named Aditi Amani, who travels to Samsara after receiving a message from her father promising to reveal the truth behind a miracle from her childhood. She soon confronts a reality where the line between truth and manipulation is constantly blurred.

A dark fantasy action RPG inspired by FromSoftware’s King’s Field and Dark Souls series, while also blending elements of metroidvania, roguelike, and horror. The game takes place in a vast, unnamed castle, where the player assumes the role of a prisoner who awakens in a cell surrounded by undead, monstrous creatures, and deadly traps. The only goal is to escape alive. Death in Decrepit is not final: each defeat returns the character to a different cell, gradually opening new routes and allowing players to better understand the interconnected structure of the castle.
