Jim Carrey died and was replaced by a lookalike? We examine a popular fan theory
Ermolaev Alexey
At the recent César Awards, which took place on February 26, 2026, Jim Carrey received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Many fans were surprised by his appearance, leading to speculation that it was not the actor himself who received the statuette, but his lookalike. In this article, we've compiled the main opinions regarding the actor's appearance change.
Jim Carrey in a nutshell
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Carrey performed as a comedian on the club stage. He emphasized his comical antics, which appealed to patrons of such establishments. Around the same time, he began to explore film acting. However, his true breakthrough came only in the 1990s, with the release of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Then came Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, Liar Liar, and other comedies. At the same time, Jim Carrey also starred in serious films, such as The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Since around 2017, a sharp decline in the actor's activity has been noticeable. There are many reasons for this, from a decline in popularity to Carrey's own statements about reconsidering his values. For example, he devotes a lot of time to painting and sculpting. Over the past eight years, Jim has only appeared in the TV series Kidding and the trilogy Sonic the Hedgehog.

What happened at the 2026 Cesar Awards
During his film career, Jim Carrey has never been nominated for an Oscar, although the actor himself has admitted that he would like to win one. Among his prestigious awards, two Golden Globes stand out, awarded to him in 1999 and 2000 for Best Actor in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Many years later, in 2026, he was awarded the honorary César Award at the 51st annual ceremony. This award recognizes not a specific body of work, but an outstanding contribution to world cinema. The award was presented by Michel Gondry, director of the aforementioned drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The ceremony took place in Paris, so Carrey prepared a touching speech in French, which he delivered with a strong American accent:
For an actor, every character you play is like clay in the hands of a sculptor, molded to your will. How fortunate I am to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.
Thank you to my amazing life partner, Mina. I love you, Mina. And finally, thank you to the funniest man I've ever known: my father, Percy Joseph Carrey, who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter.
This award was a big deal not because it was Jim Carrey's first time receiving it. Fans noticed a radical change in the actor's appearance. Many conspiracy theorists have offered their own theories about what happened.

How fans explain Jim Carrey's appearance
The most popular theory is that it's not Carrey, but his double. Moreover, changes in the actor's face weren't the only ones noted. Fans noticed a different iris color and overall look, a new demeanor in public, and much more. They studied every frame from the ceremony and found more and more differences in the smallest details.
The question inevitably arises: if someone else won the César Award, then where is the real Jim Carrey? The answer was quickly found: he's dead. Others claim it's not that bad, that he was simply kidnapped. However, the second option seems less plausible to many, as these problems need to be addressed radically.
It would seem unnecessary to eliminate someone, since we're not talking about the leader of a hostile state or a criminal who has made enemies, but about an actor whose peak of fame passed twenty years ago. However, in recent years, he has been actively critical of the global elite, speaking out about their passion for cannibalism and the power of the Illuminati. Today, against the backdrop of the publication of the Jeffrey Epstein files, this topic is in the spotlight. Conspiracy theorists believe that it was precisely for such statements that they decided to get rid of Carrey. However, for some reason, they did not in they celebrated his death, but pretended nothing happened; the actor is still alive and well.
There are even more absurd theories, such as that we're looking at a Jim Carrey clone. However, it's not clear why, in this case, the differences in the actor's face are noticeable.
Another explanation for the change in Jim Carrey's appearance
Professional surgeons have put forward a completely different theory: Jim recently underwent plastic surgery on his face, or more precisely, upper eyelid blepharoplasty. He is now in the recovery period, which is expected to last up to six months. This could also explain the changes in Carrey's facial expressions—they are now limited due to the effects of cosmetic procedures. A similar effect can be caused by simple Botox injections, which are also noticeable on the actor's face. In any case, the muscles haven't yet harmonized with the nerve fibers, so they don't always move naturally. This is especially striking compared to Jim Carrey's rich facial expressions in his early work, which is what made him famous worldwide.
It's also worth considering that changes in appearance are influenced by natural aging and weight fluctuations. Furthermore, the same person can look different depending on the lighting.
And don't think this is the first time a famous actor's face has sparked heated debate. Something similar happened back in November 2025, after his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where he represented Soundgarden. But back then, it didn't reach the level of conspiracy theories.
Another explanation for Jim Carrey's appearance changes
Alexis Stone, a man known for impersonating famous people, joined the discussion. On his social media account, he shared a photo of a mask supposedly used to make him look like Jim Carrey. It's captioned "Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris," implying that this man won the Cesar Award instead of the actor. Frankly, this theory is also highly dubious.
