Call of Duty: Modern Warfare — a reboot of the eponymous first-person shooter series. A dynamic plot with action-movie-level direction, where players, as high-class fighters, influence the global balance of power, undertake thrilling secret operations as part of an international special forces unit in Europe and the volatile Middle East. There is cooperative play and several multiplayer modes — for entertainment and eSports.
The events of Modern Warfare begin before the events of the original trilogy, which took place between 1996 and 2011, but are built on the events of 2013-2019 in our reality. This is a reboot – back to the future.
This is due to the fact that the plot of the trilogy reached a dead end (the whole world in flames), so in the reboot, players will find a completely new backstory, a chain of plot events, main villains, and rewritten biographies and characters of well-known heroes, such as Captain Price and Kyle Garrick (Gaz). Formally, both the old and new trilogies take place in the same universe.
The developers conveyed the meaning of "Modern Warfare" – the shooter tells about hybrid wars and how they are conducted: when terrorists turn out to be freedom fighters and vice versa, the use of chemical weapons can be a carefully planned provocation, and powerful countries have proxy armies of locals who fight instead of regular military contingents.
The updated Modern Warfare took the storytelling in first-person shooters to a new level. The invisible hand of the directors guides the player from one scene to another, interspersing them with shootouts and action moments in roughly equal proportions.
This is achieved through high-quality graphics and the work of animators — it's hard to tell where the game ends and the cutscenes begin. Immersion is influenced by numerous dialogues and comments that occur between the characters or during free movement.
In Russia, Modern Warfare became a participant in the information war, but we emphasize that the rumors are exaggerated, moreover, the plot of the series still develops in an alternate reality, for which the events of our world are merely a basis.
The game's plot unfolds in the Middle Eastern country of Urzikstan, engulfed in a civil war between multiple factions, but players will also visit Russia and Europe. Expect a dark story about a war for independence, with third countries intervening, and a lot of brutality, such as waterboarding or aggression towards children.
Unlike the old linear plots, there are more unexpected twists and ambiguous moments here. Initially, the plot is presented in one way, but when new circumstances come to light, everything is turned upside down – the good guys become bad, and the bad guys aren't so villainous. The developers called this concept "gray morality."
Modern Warfare 2019 remained true to its roots but became better than Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and Battlefield 5 — the shootouts are fiercer, more dynamic, and less predictable. The developers made numerous changes to the gameplay – big and small, let's list the main ones.
They completely overhauled the shooting physics. It is closer to reality than all arcade competitors. Also with the characteristics of each "gun". Completely redesigned weapon handling animations, reloading, aiming, and recoil. As a result, the weapon feels like it's in the player's hands.
New features include double sprint and peeking around corners (with weapon support or just), very fast kills (2-3 bullets from a rifle and it's over).
The game has a large arsenal of weapons in all shapes and sizes (including vehicles), which can be customized to suit your play style and reduce drawbacks with modifications (from three to six), of which there is a huge selection.
Familiar elements have been preserved but were reworked in details — soldier classes and their customization system using perks. For example, there are many more perks now, and they affect very specific aspects of gameplay.
Leveling up has changed little — victories in battles and a bunch of daily, weekly, and other tasks give experience, which accumulates into levels. The higher the level, the more content will be unlocked. Levels also grant rare weapon skins.
The game offers co-op for 1-4 players in three variations:
- "Classic Special Ops" – mission segments from the campaign in the spirit of the original Modern Warfare, reworked for co-op. Full freedom of action, choice and customization of the soldier, and the use of vehicles included.
- "Missions" — short tasks designed for repeated playthroughs for a rating. They also allow you to take an individually customized soldier.
- "Survival" – an exclusive mode for PS4 until October 1, 2020, based on waves of enemy soldiers trying to defeat three players. To survive, you need not only to shoot accurately but also to think tactically – the enemies are determined and aggressive.
As for multiplayer, at the time of release, it already contained many modes:
- "Team Deathmatch" – two teams of 6 or 20 players each fight to the death until they reach the required number of kills of the opposing side.
- "Domination" – in this mode, teams of 6 or 20 players capture and hold three points on the map. Points are awarded for this, and the team that first reaches the required number of points wins. Deaths do not affect the statistics.
- "Free-for-All" – a simple timed mode where enemies are all around. The top three finalists will be those who made the most kills.
- "Headquarters" — a flag appears at a random location on the map, which needs to be captured and held for points. The team that scores the required number of points wins, but you'll have to run around the entire map. The mode is designed for 12 and 40 players.
- "Kill Confirmed" – once again, two teams of 6 or 20 players fight against each other. This time, after a soldier's death, a tag is left behind that can be picked up to confirm the kill, or if a teammate's tag is picked up, the kill is denied to the enemy team.
- "Cyber Attack" – two teams of 6 players fight each other. One team's task is to find an EMP bomb and deliver it to the data center, while the other team's task is to prevent this. They alternate between attacking and defending. Выигрыш в раунде засчитывается, когда убиты все бойцы одной из команд, либо уничтожена цель. Победят те, кто выиграет 5 раундов.
- «Огневой контакт» – всего пара игроков в каждой команде, но от их взаимодействия и слаженности зависит победа. Молниеносные бои и точная стрельба – вот почему этот режим так популярен.
- «Наземная война» – единственный режим для больших команд (от 20 до 64 участников), в котором, помимо пехоты, используется техника. Геймплей тут часто превращается в «мясо», где давление числом может перекрыть навыки игроков.
Сетевая игра была переработана в расчете на тактический игровой процесс, а также на исследование карты, взлом дверей и режим «Реализм», который полностью удаляет пользовательский интерфейс и по-разному усложняет положение игроков.
Карты также изменились — вместо однотипных арен с парой проходов, как в последних Black Ops, в новой Modern Warfare это уникальные, тщательно проработанные уровни. Всего их 12, но часть доступна только для «Огневого контакта».
- игра официально не продается в России для PS4 — однако это ограничение можно обойти;
- работает кросс-плей между всеми платформами, причем можно экспериментировать с управлением – выбрать клавиатуру и мышь, либо геймпад;
- никаких лутбоксов, сезонных пропусков и DLC, вместо них «боевой пропуск», открывающий доступ к косметическим улучшениям;
- для разработки проекта собралась старая команда, работавшая над первыми двумя играми оригинальной трилогии, разбежавшиеся было после увольнения основателей Infinty Ward.
