The term MMO (sometimes referred to as MMOG) stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Game. The distinguishing feature of such games is that they operate over the internet and have a large number of players.

MMO is a general term for mass online games that can actually belong to different genres. Among the most popular are MMORPGs and MMOFPSs, but there are also mass online strategies (MMORTS), as well as racing (MMORG) and social games (MMOSG).

The most popular category of online games is represented by various MMORPGs. In the Russian segment of the internet, online role-playing games are often referred to as MMORPGs, but this is more characteristic of conversational communication.

MMORPGs are commonly divided by the place of development and approach to game design into European and Korean. The most well-known example of a European MMORPG is World of Warcraft, while a Korean one is Lineage 2.
