Breakpoint is a direct continuation of the open-world military shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The game is set on a fictional island in the Pacific Ocean. Here, the familiar "Ghosts" squad from the previous game encounters the hostile special unit "Wolves" and its members must survive. Players can expect an interesting story with detailed dialogues, choices, and a large number of characters, as well as a wide arsenal of weapons and available transportation.
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is a shooter in a huge open world with a third-person view and elements of other genres, requiring an internet connection.
The action in the game includes various melee takedowns of enemies, stealth elements such as the ability to sneak through and kill enemies, and reconnaissance of the area. Survival elements require regularly feeding and hydrating the character, healing, and allowing rest to refill the stamina bar. A wounded ally will need to be carried to a safe zone on your shoulders.
Breakpoint's online capabilities are abundant. From the looter-shooter genre, it inherited numerous weapons, various upgrades and attachments (over time, you can unlock large magazines, quality suppressors, night vision scopes, and thermal scopes), different gear options, and skins for all of this. The best items are unlocked by completing raids or in PvP, as in traditional MMOs.
There is also crafting — low-level items or simply unnecessary gear can be dismantled, obtaining resources that will later be useful for creating quality and rare "guns," armor, and other items according to blueprints obtained by completing missions.
The game is designed for cooperative play with a team of four people, but it can be played solo with AI allies. In this regard, Breakpoint is less reminiscent of a tactical shooter in the spirit of the classic games of the series, where the player could command a squad, mark all targets, and eliminate them simultaneously. Now everything is tied to communication between people via voice chat.
The action of Breakpoint unfolds on the vast fictional archipelago of Aurora, located somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. In the release version, players had access to only one very large island, divided into biomes — tropics, dense jungle, arid mountain steppes, and snowy peaks. There are rivers and swamps.
The game features plenty of points of interest — laboratories, factories, enemy bunkers, and settlements of various factions. The island is inhabited, and the player cooperates with two main factions — the Homesteaders, who just want to survive, and the Outcasts, a kind of humiliated and insulted group striving to stop the experiments being conducted on the island at all costs.
Since survival plays a significant role, there are periodically points where you can set up camp. There, players can change their character, choosing a suitable team build for the next mission, replenish health and ammo, as well as customize weapons and appearance.
After release, the developers planned to expand the game world with new islands. However, the unsuccessful launch of Breakpoint put these plans into question.
Classes and Specializations
Breakpoint offers a character system in the spirit of Tom Clancy's The Division 2, with 4 classes available at launch (with more promised in the future):
- Assault — uses heavy weapons, strong armor, and has a large health pool, making them indispensable in frontal attacks, open combat, or providing cover.
- Sharpshooter — a typical sniper, using special weapons and ammunition to hit any target at long range or suppress it with fire.
- Panther — a kind of assassin, whose stealth, gadgets, and light suppression weapons are needed for infiltration, taking out nearby enemies, and are useful in hit-and-run tactics.
- Medic — typical support, helps teammates if they are wounded or bleeding out, restores their own health, and can carry the wounded faster.
In the game, you can create several operatives, but each one needs to be leveled up separately. At the same time, in Breakpoint, it doesn't matter if you are playing the story campaign, completing side quests, participating in PvP and raids, or community events — all the experience gained is summed up and invested in levels. The higher the level, the more new content is unlocked and the better the character becomes. For this, you need to always be online.
The events of the game take place in 2023, four years after Wildlands, with the main character being US Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel Anthony "Nomad" Perryman. He and his Ghost squad are sent to investigate a series of violations related to the developments of a private US Army contractor. Before landing on Aurora, the squad is attacked by drones that destroy the landing helicopters, leaving only Perryman alive.
The archipelago is not simple: it is owned by the military company Skell, which does whatever it wants. Previously, it conducted illegal development of military robots and drones but was forced to leave California. All activities are under the reliable protection of an entire army of mercenaries, who will be the main targets.
At the center of Breakpoint's story is the confrontation between the outnumbered "Ghosts" and the "Wolves" — another special unit and the most challenging enemy in the game. The enemy forces are led by Cole Walker, a former "Ghost" who appeared in Wildlands. Cole left the army when his assault team was wiped out during a mission in Bolivia and concluded that the government does not value the lives of its soldiers.
He became a mercenary seeking revenge. The antagonist is given a lot of time in the story, with his motivation revealed more and more as players delve into the events. As for the "Ghosts," they will have to adapt — they have become the prey, not the predators. As the story progresses, some characters from the Wildlands storyline will return.
The game features dialogues that do not affect the story's development, but if you talk carefully with each NPC, you can obtain intelligence that will be useful in missions.
The game has competitive multiplayer with 2 teams of 4 players each, taking place on 6 maps, using the same character classes. PvP offers two modes:
