Space Simulator Star Citizen Has Raised Over $800 Million

An astronomical sum for a space life simulator — the creators of Star Citizen have raised over $802 million for the development of the game. Let us recall that the crowdfunding campaign started back in 2012, but the project is still in the alpha stage.

As stated on the official website of Cloud Imperium Games, players continue to actively support the project with donations — daily contributions alone range from $235 to $345. And over the past six months, the company has received at least $6.8 million every month. The development is mainly financed through microtransactions in the form of paid access to the alpha version, subscriptions, and in-game purchases.

Meanwhile, Star Citizen itself still does not have a release date for the full version. In March last year, the head of Cloud Imperium Games, Chris Roberts, assured the audience that the space sim was already in the home stretch, but he did not name the dates. However, the single-player story mode Squadron 42 received a release window — Cloud Imperium Games promises to release it in 2026.

Star Citizen recently updated to alpha version 4.0, receiving a new star system with several planets and space stations. The game's servers were also updated to accommodate 400 players.
