In a recent YouTube video, Tim Cain, the creator of the original Fallout, talked about the problem of preserving games. He cited his own experience when Interplay forced him to destroy all materials for the post-apocalyptic RPG after leaving.

When discussing the value of video game history for future generations, Tim Cain mentioned an incident related to the development of the first Fallout. Shortly after he left Interplay Studios in 1998, the company contacted him and demanded that he get rid of all the work related to the game. The ban affected prototypes, code, various versions of Fallout, and other files.

The game designer complied with the request of the copyright holder, who promised to preserve the archive with the RPG's work. However, a few years later, Interplay contacted Tim Cain again, shocking him with the news that the archive had been lost. Although the code was restored, most of the materials can no longer be found.

By the way, Tim Cain himself is not worried about the popularity of the franchise — he is sure that the series will be in demand even after a century.

Recall that a selection of soundtracks for the unofficial remake of Fallout 2 was recently released. The cult RPG will acquire not only reimagined tracks from the original, but also completely new ones. And recently, the developer of Fallout 3 named one of the biggest shortcomings of the game that the remaster could fix.
