Jason Schreier Wishes Xbox «Best of Luck» in Trying to Sell $80 Games

The recent news from Microsoft about increasing the price of a number of games did not pass by Jason Schreier. The Bloomberg columnist explained in a new article why the decision will only scare players away from the AAA segment.
He noted that the highest-rated games of 2025 according to Metacritic were Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince and Split Fiction with a price of no more than $50. All three projects became commercially successful and are very popular among players.
Perhaps it’s a coincidence that the best-rated games of the year just happen to be budget titles. But I think the two facts above point to something else — a critical flaw in the video-game industry’s operations that has contributed to its plateaued growth and widespread layoffs.
In his opinion, raising the prices of games is a risky move for Microsoft. The modern gamer has a wide range of good titles to choose from, including free or inexpensive titles. So convincing the audience to spend $80 on a game will be difficult.
Hiking up prices will cause players to be even more selective in their game choices, which certainly won’t lead to more growth. Grand Theft Auto 6 and other top titles can certainly get away with it, but can the latest good-but-not-great game from Xbox?
At the end of the article, Jason Schreier wished "best of luck to Xbox and anyone else who tries to sell games for $80", since the current economic situation does not favor turning games into luxury goods.
Let's recall that at the beginning of the year, the reviewer explained why game development is becoming so expensive every year. And recently, Jason Schreier commented on the postponement of GTA 6 to 2026, sharing inside information from Rockstar Games.
