Jason Schreier: GTA 6 Delay Sends the Games Industry Into Panic
Diana Golenko
The recent delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026, has thrown the games industry into disarray. According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, several studios are now holding emergency meetings as a result of the shift.
While the delay has benefited a few projects — including Marathon, Ghost of Yotei, The Outer Worlds 2, and Ninja Gaiden 4 — others have been caught in a tough spot. Some developers had deliberately pushed their release dates to 2026 to avoid direct competition with GTA 6, only to now find themselves boxed in by Rockstar’s new schedule.
One developer working on a big multiplayer game told me that they had previously delayed their release date from fall 2025 to spring 2026. That was mostly because the game needed more time, but also to get far away from GTA 6. Now they’re caught in a vise. Delaying their game a second time would be an expensive endeavor, ratcheting up the stakes for the eventual release.
In other conversations, people working on games slated for fall 2026 told me they are praying that Rockstar doesn’t slip again — or in some cases, that it does, so they have an excuse to delay to 2027 and score more time.
Schreier likened the situation to a massive game of 4D chess, with the entire industry watching Rockstar’s every move. Business analysts are already speculating whether the studio will meet the new launch date or if another unexpected twist is coming. Of particular concern is GTA 6’s online mode, which, judging by the precedent set by GTA 5, could monopolize players’ attention for years.
On a more positive note, the recent near-simultaneous releases of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 showed that indie titles can still thrive even alongside major publisher launches.
