The announcement of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet wasn't without controversy, as the game’s debut triggered a wave of negativity from some players—particularly directed at its lead character. Fortunately, the actress behind the role of the bounty hunter Jordan was well-prepared for such a reaction.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tati Gabrielle revealed that Naughty Dog’s co-president Neil Druckmann had warned her early on about the possibility of a hostile reception. He cited the experience of Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in The Last of Us Part 2 and faced real-world threats from fans angry about the game’s narrative. Druckmann helped Gabrielle brace herself for similar treatment.

I got a lot of love, but there was a lot of hate over me being a woman, me being a woman of color, me having my head shaved, all these things that I didn't even actually initially see — I'm out of the social media zeitgeist for that reason — but once I did, Neil was like, "Ignore it. No matter what, me and you, we're going to make something beautiful. We're going to make something that we're proud of."

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is in development as a sci-fi action title for PlayStation 5. The story follows Jordan, a bounty hunter who crash-lands on a planet isolated from the rest of the galaxy — a world steeped in the lore of a local religion. No release date has been announced yet.

Neil Druckmann has previously teased new details about the project. It is known that the game will be somewhat reminiscent of Elden Ring.
