CD Projekt RED recently showcased a tech demo for The Witcher 4 running on Unreal Engine 5. The studio was quick to clarify: this is not gameplay, but rather a technical demonstration designed to show off the engine’s capabilities and development tools. The demo features Ciri in a brand-new setting — the kingdom of Kovir, including the port city of Valdrest and the capital, Lan Exeter.
Here’s what we know:
- The demo was captured on PlayStation 5 and runs at 60 FPS;
- One marketplace scene features 300 fully animated NPCs;
- There’s impressively smooth animation for interactions between Ciri, her horse Kelpie, and the environment;
- CD Projekt RED stated that the visual style in the demo reflects the direction the studio is heading, but it’s not the final version;
- The game is still deep in development, with “a lot of work ahead”;
- The studio’s goal is to create one of the most technologically advanced RPGs to date;
- The demo was built specifically for PS5 to ensure optimization for consoles from the very beginning. This should help with performance across all platforms, including lower-end hardware like the Xbox Series S.
Previously, we reported that most gamers were pleased with Ciri’s updated look in the new The Witcher 4 trailer.
