Bethesda Explains Why Fallout Is Unlikely to Explore Settings Outside the U.S.

Many Fallout fans still dream of seeing the beloved RPG set in other countries—but Bethesda isn’t exactly on board with that idea. As it stands, the series will likely remain rooted in post-apocalyptic America.

Insider Gaming’s editor-in-chief, Grant Taylor-Hill, asked developers at Bethesda Game Studios whether fans should expect a Fallout game set outside the United States. While Fallout lore confirms that the nuclear apocalypse affected the entire globe, Creative Director Jonathan Rush explained why taking the franchise abroad is unlikely.

I would never say never, but I will say, probably not.

A big part of the spirit of Fallout is that sense of America. That’s kind of pulsing through all the stories and the scenery and the set dressing. If a story like Fallout was to be taken out of the United States, I think a big challenge with that would be kind of expressing that same tone and that same feel.

That’s a bit part of what makes it Fallout, it’s the Americana against the darker moments, and against the moments with more levity and finding that balance, that’s really what Fallout is.

Bethesda also noted that it intentionally keeps events outside of the post-nuclear U.S. shrouded in mystery, as a way to fuel fan curiosity and inspire creative theories and personal interpretations of the world.

In related news, the “father” of the Fallout universe recently explained why a remaster of the first game is nearly impossible. Meanwhile, fresh rumors have emerged about a potential remaster of Fallout 3.
