Rumor: Canceled GTA 6 Storylines Revealed — One Was Considered Too Dark

New rumors from reputable insider Fravilys have shed light on the early creative efforts of Rockstar Games co-founder and lead writer Dan Houser (known for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2) to develop the story for GTA 6. According to the source, Houser pitched three different concepts before the current version was approved by publisher Take-Two Interactive in 2019. None of these early drafts made it to full development.
First Version (2014–2016)
Houser’s initial idea centered around three main characters: an aging police officer, his drug-addicted son, and a Colombian drug lord the father is forced to work with. The story focused on the moral downfall of an honest cop willing to break the law to save his son. The script was dark, full of internal conflict and difficult moral dilemmas, but was ultimately rejected for being too depressing.
Second Version (up to 2018)
The second concept would have taken players to Vice City and revolved around a female cop going undercover in the criminal underworld for revenge. She would be joined by another protagonist — a crazed drug courier inspired by Trevor from GTA 5. The relationship between the characters was left undeveloped. This version also failed to get the green light and was scrapped by 2018.
Third Version (2019)
In Houser’s final attempt, the story followed a former African-American soldier just released from prison. However, this idea was also deemed unworkable early in development and was quickly abandoned.
Approved Concept
After a series of rejected scripts, the final concept was approved at the end of 2019. The story now centers on a criminal duo inspired by the infamous Bonnie and Clyde.
Main Characters:
- Jason — a former soldier whose descent into crime is driven by external pressures. He partially inherited traits from the protagonist of the third canceled version, but was reimagined: he’s no longer an ex-con and has a different ethnic background;
- Lucia — a Latina from Liberty City, recently released from prison, with a rich criminal past.
It’s worth noting that Dan Houser left Rockstar in 2020, a year after taking a creative sabbatical. He later founded a new studio, Absurd Ventures, though little is known about its future projects. In January, the first look at characters from the studio’s upcoming game was revealed.
While Fravilys has previously provided accurate details about the RAGE engine, it’s important to note that all of the above remains unconfirmed — neither Rockstar nor Take-Two have commented on these rumors.
As a reminder, GTA 6 is expected to launch on May 26, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
