Skyblivion Developers Reveal How Their Project Will Surpass TES 4: Oblivion Remastered

It seems that the fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the Skyrim engine could technically outshine Bethesda and Virtuos Studios’ official remaster — though there’s a downside for nostalgic fans of the original.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Skyblivion project lead and modder Rebelzize revealed that their version benefits from the more optimized Skyrim-era Creation Engine. That means many of the iconic bugs and quirks from Oblivion — like the infamous bandit quotes, items flying across rooms, or guards teleporting to the player after stealing a tomato — will not be replicated.

The problem there is that this remake of Oblivion takes place in a completely different engine. Most of these bugs or funny features are very engine-specific. So for instance, lot of those funny clips from Oblivion stem from the game freezing when you're in a dialog with someone.

With the assassination of Uriel Septim in the tutorial dungeon, Uriel will sometimes talk to you while the assassin has already appeared behind him, and he's like, "Oh, I hope nothing bad will happen to me!" Like the guy is just staring [at him], breathing down his neck.

Skyblivion won’t have those moments — not because the team didn’t want to include them, but because the engine simply doesn’t allow for the same kind of unpredictable behavior. In contrast, Oblivion Remastered retains all of the original’s quirks, since it’s built directly on top of the same core systems.

Beyond technical improvements, Skyblivion also aims to deliver a darker and more atmospheric take on Cyrodiil. For example, the daedra-invaded city of Kvatch has been reimagined to resemble an actual battlefield — far more intense than its depiction in the original or remaster. The team has also redesigned aspects that frustrated players, such as repetitive dungeon layouts and the lack of shortcuts.

Skyblivion is slated for release later this year on PC and will be installable via GOG using a dedicated launcher. Recently, the team showcased upgraded Ayleid ruins.
