Capcom Reveals Footage from Canceled Early Version of Resident Evil 9

During yesterday's Capcom Spotlight presentation, the developers unveiled a glimpse of the early concept for Resident Evil: Requiem, confirming long-standing rumors about a canceled online-focused RE9 project.

Game director Koshi Nakanishi showcased early footage (timestamp: 0:57) of the scrapped version, which was designed as a multiplayer experience. The prototype featured multiple playable characters, an open world, loot mechanics, and intense action-oriented gameplay. However, the online shooter was eventually shelved.

According to Capcom, despite some promising ideas, the concept ultimately "wasn’t what fans wanted to see or play." This led the team to start from scratch, which eventually gave rise to the current iteration, Resident Evil: Requiem.

As a reminder, Resident Evil: Requiem is set to release on February 27, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Capcom debuted the first gameplay footage during the showcase and shared a wealth of new details about the upcoming survival horror title.
