Free Giveaway of Ampersat Begins on Steam — Highly-Rated RPG Action Game Inspired by The Legend of Zelda

Steam has launched a free giveaway for Ampersat, an action RPG that first released in 2022 and boasts an impressive 81% positive rating. Players praise its nostalgic “retro adventure” atmosphere.

Ampersat combines classic retro aesthetics with modern gameplay mechanics. Developed by a solo creator, the game draws inspiration from Gauntlet, Smash TV, The Legend of Zelda, and Angband, featuring a unique visual style with ASCII symbols in a 3D environment and a soundtrack reminiscent of the Commodore 64 era.

Players take on the role of a battle mage named Ampersat, venturing through dungeons and towers to free the village of Gentlheim from the clutches of Lord Z. Along the way, you’ll help restore the villagers’ lost language, battle dozens of enemy types, defeat powerful bosses, collect hundreds of items, and upgrade your character using a flexible skill system.

The game offers over 50 handcrafted levels filled with exploration and puzzles, as well as a procedurally generated area for endless runs. Players can also upgrade buildings in the village, choose their own progression path, and even invite a second player in asynchronous co-op mode—where the second player controls an invulnerable fairy that assists in combat.
