Philipp Weber, narrative director of The Witcher 4, has admitted he sometimes worries about how to make the new game “better” than the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3. However, he emphasizes that video games aren’t math—you can’t just compare them by formula.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Weber acknowledged how much fans value the third installment and how often he hears the question, “How are they going to top it?” He says he asks himself the same thing, but reminds himself that success in games is subjective. Rather than trying to outdo The Witcher 3, he believes it’s more important to create a worthy sequel that preserves the beloved approach to world-building, storytelling, and quest design.
Weber stressed that The Witcher 4 won’t simply copy previous games, but it also won’t abandon their spirit. The new entry will introduce fresh themes and questions the developers want to explore, aiming to craft a truly new adventure instead of just repeating past successes.
I think the way we want to do justice to the legacy of The Witcher 3 is to take the philosophy we had during The Witcher 3 — how to make a game, how to really care about these things, how to tell stories — and keep that philosophy. At the same time, there are new questions we want to answer, because this is supposed to feel like a true sequel, not just redoing what we did before. And I think it's really trying to have that healthy mix of really moving forward and also trying out some new things, but doing justice to what was there, not trying to beat it.
As an example, Weber shared that his favorite game in the series is still the original Witcher, despite its outdated mechanics and criticism. For him, if The Witcher 4 can inspire the same genuine love from some players as previous games did, then the team will have achieved their goal.
