"Bigger Than Anything Else" — GTA 6 Is a AAAAA-Tier Game, Says Devolver Digital Co-Founder

When it comes to scale, nothing compares to the Grand Theft Auto series, according to Devolver Digital co-founder Nigel Lowrie. Recently, he even called GTA 6 a "AAAAA-tier" game—a new standard that goes far beyond the usual AAA and AAAA categories.
I mean, there are AAA games and then there's AAAA games and I'd argue that Grand Theft Auto is potentially the AAAAA game; it's just bigger than anything else both in the scope and scale of the game and the kind of cultural impact that it has and the attention it demands.
He made this statement while discussing GTA 6’s influence on the industry. It was also revealed that Devolver Digital considered shifting some of its own releases to avoid going head-to-head with Rockstar’s blockbuster. According to Lowrie, GTA 6 is so massive it "blinds" you when planning a release calendar.
This assessment from Devolver Digital is especially notable—the company is known for its successful projects in both niche and mainstream segments, including Cult of the Lamb, Shadow Warrior 3, Serious Sam 4, Katana Zero, and The Talos Principle 2.
For comparison, Ubisoft previously positioned Skull & Bones as a AAAA game, but in reality, it received mixed reviews—its Steam rating sits at just 66%.
GTA 6 was originally slated for release this year, but the launch was pushed back to May 26, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
