Oblivion Remastered’s Steam Rating Plummets Amid Major Issues
Diana Golenko
The player community’s attitude toward The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is shifting. After several months of glowing reception, the remaster’s rating on Steam has started to drop due to bugs, poor optimization, and other problems.
Recent English-language reviews on Valve’s platform have slipped to “Mixed,” with only 61% of them positive. Looking at the trend, it’s clear that positive and negative reviews are steadily evening out. Most PC players are voicing frustration with the game’s technical state, which still hasn’t been fixed.
Can no longer recommend. I used to have no issues running this game at 75+ FPS, maybe 50+ FPS minimum if there was an abundance of enemies/spells on-screen. Through recent changes and updates, this is no longer the case; loading screens now take upwards of a minute between areas, and I'm lucky to get 30 FPS in cities like Bruma or Bravil.
Could be a great remaster but the performance is atrocious. For that reason I don't want to play it.
New UI or UE5 bugs add to the many bugs still unresolved since 2006. Poor support and very few and slow updates. As a modder I had to mod/fix this game back in 2006, and now in 2025 this chore continues (and not all bugs can be fixed with mods or OBSE anyway)... A real pity the bad destiny of this ARPG Masterpiece is in the hands of usual Bethesda (+ Virtuos).
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered launched on April 22 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. The project brought all of the original 2006 game’s content and scripts into Unreal Engine 5, reviving the classic but also preserving its issues, down to the bugs. Meanwhile, Virtuos Studios — the team behind the remaster — has faced layoffs. Our review of the remaster can be read here.
