Battlefield 6 Devs Explain How Fans' "Rose-Tinted Glasses" Complicate the Return of Classic Maps

Many fans of the series are hoping that Battlefield 6 will bring back more remastered maps from past installments that players have grown to love. Developers at DICE, however, are cautious about the idea — mainly because of overly high expectations.

Design director Shashank Uchil revealed in an interview with PCGamesN that bringing back classic maps isn’t nearly as simple as it sounds. Instead of a straightforward copy-and-paste job, the team has to painstakingly recreate familiar locations while also making sure they fit modern technology and gameplay requirements — all while living up to players’ expectations:

You wouldn't believe how difficult it is. Because [of players'] expectations. People know the map and people have certain expectations. But also there's rose-tinted glasses, like, this is how it used to be.

At this point, only Operation Firestorm from Battlefield 3 has been confirmed to return. According to Uchil, adapting the map to work with weapons that weren’t present in BF3 was no easy task. The team also had to rework destructibility, which required extra effort. Simply leaving everything as it was would have led to even more disappointment, says DICE producer Jeremy Chubb:

It's a fine line, because people have really particular views about what that map was. They want that experience realized. But I think that we would disappoint people little if we weren't able to evolve it and embrace the new ideas and features that we have in this game.
