Obsidian Temporarily Removes Several Games Due to Unity Vulnerability — Grounded 2, Avowed, and Pillars of Eternity Affected

Obsidian Entertainment has unexpectedly pulled several of its titles from the Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam digital storefronts. The reason is a newly discovered security vulnerability in the Unity engine.
The studio issued a statement on social media, stressing that this is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring player safety. No specific details about the vulnerability were provided, but developers are already working on fixes. Once patches are released, players are strongly advised to install them before launching the affected games.
The following titles and editions have been temporarily delisted:
- Grounded 2 Founders Edition;
- Grounded 2 Founders Pack;
- Avowed Premium Edition;
- Avowed Premium Edition Upgrade;
- Pillars of Eternity: Hero Edition;
- Pillars of Eternity: Definitive Edition;
- Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire;
- Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Ultimate;
- Pentiment.
Interestingly, some of Obsidian’s games — such as Avowed — are built on Unreal Engine, but certain bonus materials like artbooks were developed with Unity, which led to their removal as well. In the case of Pentiment, which was fully built on Unity, the entire game has been taken down.
The updated versions are expected to return to digital storefronts once the fixes are implemented. Obsidian has not specified when this will happen but assured that the issue will be resolved soon.
As for the vulnerability itself, Unity confirmed that it had identified a flaw in the engine’s code dating back to 2017. Depending on the operating system, the exploit could allow unsafe file downloads and enable local execution of malicious software. Unity developers have already patched the issue, and it is now up to studios to update their Unity-based games.
By the way, The Outer Worlds 2 — the new RPG from Obsidian Entertainment — is set to launch on October 29. The sequel to the space role-playing adventure will be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. You can watch the latest trailer here.
