Fallout Shelter and Other Games Temporarily Pulled from Steam Due to Unity Vulnerability

Following Obsidian Entertainment, other studios have also temporarily pulled their projects from stores. For example, Bethesda removed Fallout Shelter from sale after a serious vulnerability was discovered in the Unity engine.
The Unity engine vulnerability, which had remained dormant for almost ten years, was recently patched. As a result, game developers also need to release updates, so many projects are expected to receive sudden patches in the near future, even those considered long finished. For example, Overcooked 2 will receive an update. Notably, the popular Genshin Impact also requires an urgent patch.
Microsoft has announced that some of its games will be temporarily removed from stores while fixes are being developed. Currently, Fallout Shelter, Wasteland Remastered, and Wasteland 3 cannot be found on Steam. Owners of these games still have access to them, but Microsoft recommends temporarily uninstalling the apps.
Even games not originally made in Unity have been affected if their companion apps or digital artbooks were developed on the engine. For example, Avowed, developed in Unreal Engine 5, has a digital artbook implemented as a Unity application.
It’s worth noting that the vulnerability has not harmed anyone so far. As Unity explained, programs on the engine are potentially at risk from unsafe file loading and local file inclusion depending on the operating system, but for an attack to affect a user, malicious files would need to already be present on their device.
