Resident Evil, Prey, and Bioshock: Developers of Soviet Sci-Fi Horror Satellite Odyssey: Jupiter Reveal Their Inspirations

At gamescom asia 2025, VGTimes spoke with the Russian studio Antifreeze Games, currently developing the dark sci-fi horror Satellite Odyssey: Jupiter, inspired by the aesthetics of Soviet retrofuturism. Game director Sergey Karetnikov shared exclusive details about the project and revealed its creative influences — including Resident Evil, Bioshock, and Prey.
The game’s story unfolds on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons, where the Soviet Union has built a futuristic city. After a rogue AI sparks a rebellion and seizes control through an army of clones, the player — taking on the role of a fugitive woman — must uncover the truth and survive in a grim, dystopian world.
In tone and structure, Satellite Odyssey: Jupiter draws heavily from Resident Evil 2 Remake, offering around 10 hours of gameplay that blend survival horror and science fiction. The developers describe their project as a mix of Resident Evil’s tension, Bioshock’s atmosphere, and Prey’s sense of isolation — all wrapped in the aesthetic of a Soviet future that never was.
Despite a core team of just six developers, Antifreeze Games aims to refine and expand the formula of Resident Evil, while building their own identity in the process. The first playable build was showcased at the event, with public playtests scheduled for late November.
Satellite Odyssey: Jupiter is expected to release in late 2026 or early 2027. The full interview is available here.
