New Footage and Updated Combat in Gothic 1 Remake: First Impressions from the Latest Demo

Alkimia Interactive, the studio behind Gothic 1 Remake, continues to overhaul the game’s combat system. After facing a wave of criticism over the Gamescom 2024 demo, the developers have made noticeable improvements to the mechanics — as confirmed during Poznań Game Arena in Poland.
Polish outlet CD-Action got hands-on with the latest build. The biggest changes involve animation quality and responsiveness. The hero now moves more fluidly, and attacks feel smoother and more natural. The combo system requires proper rhythm — players must alternate between left and right mouse clicks in a set tempo to chain strikes together. This brings a touch of depth and discipline to combat, though it’s still not quite on par with top-tier RPGs.
Parrying also plays a crucial role, especially in battles against tougher foes. However, CD-Action notes that it doesn’t always work as intended — parry animations sometimes fail to sync with enemy hits, which can feel unfair.
The outlet praised the weapon variety — each type feels distinct. The sword is well-balanced, the two-hander hits hard but swings slowly, the axe is fast and light, while the spear remains the most unwieldy. Magic, on the other hand, offers plenty of flexibility, from ice projectiles to catapult-like fireballs and devastating area-of-effect spells.
Despite these improvements, the combat still retains a touch of “Eurojank” — animations remain a bit stiff, and the overall pacing isn’t perfect. However, control responsiveness has improved significantly compared to earlier demos.
Remake director Reinhard Pollice stated that the combat system remains Alkimia Interactive’s top priority. The studio claims to be listening closely to community feedback and continues refining the mechanics. Still, as journalists note, the goal now might not be to create the perfect combat system — but simply one that players can accept.
Gothic 1 Remake is scheduled to release in 2026 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Alkimia Interactive recently updated the game’s Steam page, suggesting a Q1 2026 launch window — possibly March 15, mirroring the release date of the original Gothic.
