Time flies — and Vermintide, the co-op action game set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe, is already celebrating its 10th anniversary. Over the years, the series has evolved from a niche experiment into a cult classic, building a devoted community of fans for whom battling endless hordes of Skaven has become more than just a pastime — almost a way of life.

As Victor Magnuson, now design director on Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, recalls at PC Gamer interview, Vermintide players have always been exceptionally dedicated:

We had a guy in Korea that broke Vermintide 1 because he had played it so much he hit, in the background, level 999 or something like that. He just got stuck because it couldn't go above that number. We had to patch the game to allow him to play more, because the number just couldn't go up. Then we started counting, like, he must have played almost every waking hour since the game launched to be able to hit that number.

Stories like this illustrate why Fatshark isn’t abandoning its veterans. To mark the franchise’s anniversary, the studio unveiled an updated roadmap for Darktide and Vermintide 2. Both games will continue to receive content updates — but players shouldn’t expect Vermintide 3 anytime soon. Design director Joakim Setterberg explained that Vermintide 2 still has plenty of life left in it:

We can always do campaigns going off in different directions, exploring the Warhammer Fantasy world. There's still a lot of stuff, which includes expanding on the things that we've already been doing, like Chaos Wastes. For that matter, there's a lot of gameplay stuff that players would want us to revisit or—not 'fix', but we have some systems in place that are a bit rough. We could always tweak those. Quality-of-life wise, I'd say there's a lot of stuff to do still. So Vermintide will keep on going.

Fatshark confirmed that Vermintide 2 will continue to grow with new areas, enemies, and quality-of-life improvements. Some mechanics from Darktide may also make their way into the fantasy sequel over time. And while the studio isn’t talking about Vermintide 3 just yet, the series looks more alive than ever.

Earlier, to celebrate the franchise’s 10th anniversary, Fatshark announced a brand-new map for Vermintide 2 and an additional class for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Meanwhile, the grimdark universe of eternal war keeps expanding — Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is currently in development, and you can read more about it here.
