TikTok Owner ByteDance Is Reportedly Developing GameTop — a Global Steam Competitor
ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, is developing a new global game distribution platform called GameTop — positioned as an international alternative to Steam. The service will allow users to buy, download, and publish games, as well as interact within a built-in gaming community.
According to Chinese and international media, GameTop will focus primarily on the global market. ByteDance has already begun assembling an operations team responsible for user acquisition, market segmentation, and growth strategy.
As reported by TechNode, the platform aims to provide a personalized gaming experience with integrated content creation tools. Beyond a traditional game catalog, GameTop is expected to function as a social hub for players and developers — complete with communication features and the ability to publish original projects.
The initiative comes as part of a major restructuring of ByteDance’s gaming division, now led by Zhang Yufan since 2024. Under his leadership, the company has shifted from an aggressive expansion strategy to a more pragmatic focus on efficiency and process optimization.
There’s no word yet on when GameTop will become available to users. For now, Steam remains the undisputed “people’s platform” — and its big Halloween sale is already live, celebrating horror games of all kinds — even the ones where the scariest thing is the controls.
