Peter Molyneux — the legendary British game designer known as much for his groundbreaking ideas as for a string of overambitious promises — has revealed new details about his upcoming project Masters of Albion. According to him, it will be a «redemption game» combining elements of Fable, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper.

In an interview with Edge (via VGC), Molyneux admitted that many of his previous ambitions never fully materialized:

The phrase from Fable — «Every choice has a consequence» — wasn’t realized deeply enough. In Dungeon Keeper, the possession mechanic didn’t work as intended. In Black & White, the open world started strong but fell apart later. With Masters of Albion, I want to combine all of that — RTS, god game, and RPG — and prove that they can coexist.
— Peter Molyneux

The developer noted that this project will be his last — partly due to health reasons, but also because he wants to end his career on a meaningful note:

This is my attempt to fix the mistakes of the past. I admit I’ve often promised more than I could deliver — especially with Curiosity. But I always believed my intentions were good. Masters of Albion is my chance at redemption. And it will be my final project.
— Peter Molyneux

True to form, Molyneux couldn’t resist adding a touch of confidence:

It’s not just a strategy game, not just a city builder. It’s Black & White, it’s Dungeon Keeper, it’s Fable — and yet something entirely new. I’m not calling it a «great game», because that would sound like another promise. But it’s a unique experience — and it truly works.
— Peter Molyneux

Masters of Albion was announced at Gamescom 2024 and has been in development for more than three years. Players will build a settlement by day and defend it at night against hordes of undead — from ghouls to zombies. The game is being developed for PC, with no release date announced yet.
