Remedy Continues Work on Max Payne Remake Despite CEO Departure—Release Possible in 2026

Remedy Entertainment is pushing ahead with development on the Max Payne Remake, even after the recent departure of CEO Tero Virtala. The project, created in collaboration with Rockstar Games, has been in full production for over 15 months. According to the company, around 200 employees are involved, and the entire development cycle is expected to take about 1–2 years, followed by a six-month beta testing phase. If everything goes according to plan, the remake could launch by the end of 2026.
Markus Mäki has stepped in as interim CEO. He stated that Remedy’s main focus is on its established franchises—Control, Alan Wake, and Max Payne Remake.
Remedy’s Q3 2025 financial report showed a 32% drop in revenue—from €17.9 million to €12.2 million—mainly due to decreased income from development services.
For the reporting period, the main sources of revenue were development fees from Max Payne 1 & 2 remake and Control 2 as well as sales revenue from FBC: Firebreak related subscription service agreements, Alan Wake 2 royalties and Control related game sales.
Majority of our effort goes into working with our established franchises – Control and Alan Wake (…) We’re focused on the Max Payne 1&2 remake with Rockstar Games.
Currently, Remedy Entertainment is working on several projects:
- FBC: Firebreak — Already released, but the team continues to support and update the game (post-launch development);
- Control 2 — In full development, with content and mechanics actively being created;
- New Project — In the concept stage, with the core idea being tested before full development begins;
- Max Payne Remake — In full production, developed in partnership with Rockstar Games.
Remedy has also set a strategic goal to double its 2024 revenue by 2027, with Max Payne Remake and Control 2 expected to be key drivers of this growth.
The company promises to share more details about the remakes after the release of its Q4 2025 financial report, expected in late January 2026.
