Rumor: Microsoft Reportedly Working on Halo 2 and 3 Remakes — Both Moving to Unreal Engine 5

After a long hiatus, Microsoft has officially announced the return of Halo — the legendary shooter that helped define the Xbox brand. The first step will be a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, described as a single-player reimagining of the original with modern visuals while preserving the classic spirit and structure of the game.

Now, new details have surfaced. According to insider Halo Leaks, Microsoft is reportedly planning remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3 as well. Both projects will follow the same blueprint as Combat Evolved Remake — single-player only, with no multiplayer component. Multiplayer modes are expected to return only with the next mainline title, Halo 7, which insiders claim won’t arrive until late 2026 or 2027. Microsoft has not officially confirmed this information, so it should be taken with caution.

It’s also reported that each remake will launch about a year apart, and all future entries in the series will be released on PlayStation 5 for the first time. Following Xbox’s internal policy shift, platform exclusivity is no longer a priority, with Microsoft now viewing PlayStation as a legitimate platform for its major franchises.

However, insiders warn that Halo Studios is currently facing leadership issues, and the team is reportedly dissatisfied with the current development direction.

Previously, fans compared the visuals of Halo: Combat Evolved with Halo: Campaign Evolved — the Unreal Engine 5 remake of the first game, which is expected to launch in 2026.
