Tomb Raider Developer Crystal Dynamics Lays Off Another 30 Employees — Third Round This Year
Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider series, has announced another wave of layoffs — the third since the beginning of the year. This time, “fewer than 30 employees” were affected across multiple departments and projects.
Today we made the difficult but necessary decision to restructure parts of the studio and our teams. We want to thank all employees impacted by these changes for their talent, hard work, and contributions to Crystal Dynamics.
According to the studio, the decision was driven by “the realities of a constantly changing industry.” The restructuring is aimed at optimizing development on the next Tomb Raider title and preparing for “the next generation of projects.”
Over the past two years, Crystal Dynamics has gone through four rounds of layoffs, with at least 60 employees leaving the company. In September, the studio also saw the cancellation of its collaborative reboot of Perfect Dark with Microsoft, marking another setback for the team.
Currently, the studio’s only active project listed on its official site is the second season of the Netflix animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, set to release in December — after which the show will reportedly conclude.
While layoffs at Crystal Dynamics have been relatively quiet, the situation contrasts sharply with the ongoing controversy surrounding Rockstar Games, where former employees describe their struggle as “a fight for our lives.”
