German actor Udo Kier, one of the cast members of Kojima Productions’ upcoming project OD, has passed away. According to Variety, which cites the actor’s close associates, Kier died on Sunday morning. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Udo Kier was a significant figure in film and pop culture: his career spanned more than 200 films and TV series, beginning with his debut in 1966. He frequently collaborated with Andy Warhol and appeared in numerous horror and vampire films. In the 1990s, Kier became known to a wider audience thanks to roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Blade, and Johnny Mnemonic.
Kier was also active in the video game industry. He voiced Yuri in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and its expansion Yuri’s Revenge, portrayed Dr. Peter Staub in Call of Duty: WWII, and played a character named Erich in Martha is Dead. He also appeared in the film adaptations of Far Cry and BloodRayne.
One of his future projects was meant to be OD, a new horror title from Hideo Kojima. According to Kojima’s statement, Kier had not yet begun filming: the game designer noted that production was scheduled to start this coming spring.
I still can’t believe this.
Udo wasn’t just an actor. He was truly an “icon” of his time. We’ve lost a great “icon.” There will never be another like him.
Udo, rest in peace. I will never forget you.
Kier’s role in OD was introduced at The Game Awards 2023, alongside Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis. The project received a brief teaser earlier this year. It remains unknown what will happen with Kier’s role going forward.
