“Huge Respect To The Folks At Obsidian”: Bethesda Invited The Creators Of Fallout: New Vegas To The Filming Of Fallout Season 2

For many years, fans have believed that Bethesda supposedly dislikes Obsidian because of the cult status of Fallout: New Vegas. However, Todd Howard has dispelled this myth: according to him, the relationship between the studios has always been warm, and giving New Vegas to an external team was Bethesda’s own initiative.

He recalled that after the release of Fallout 3, the studio was busy with Skyrim and was looking for partners to work on another Fallout project in parallel. Approaching Obsidian was a deliberate decision:

When we went to do [New Vegas], we were coming off of Fallout 3. We knew we were going to do Skyrim. We know the folks at Obsidian well, love their work, and so we reached out to them and said, "Hey, would you like to do this? We see something else coming off of Fallout 3".
— Todd Howard

Although New Vegas remained the only Fallout game developed by Obsidian, interest in it hasn’t faded. In the second season of the Fallout TV series, viewers will visit familiar New Vegas locations — from casinos to deserts filled with deathclaws. Many of these places were chosen with Bethesda’s involvement. Todd Howard added that even Obsidian employees visited the set and were impressed:

Huge respect to the folks at Obsidian. Had them out to the set to see this, and they've had just an incredible year, if you look at the year they've had.
— Todd Howard

According to Howard, Bethesda isn’t bothered at all by the fact that some fans consider New Vegas the best game in the series:

This is what we asked them to do, right? And they just did an incredible job on New Vegas.
— Todd Howard

He also noted that the variety of opinions within the community is a sign of a healthy franchise: some prefer Fallout 3 or 4, some love New Vegas, and some even enjoy 76 — and that’s perfectly fine.

Earlier, Todd Howard shared which Fallout faction he would like to join. It was also recently reported that the second season of the Fallout show will avoid canonizing any of New Vegas’ multiple endings.
