Tom Henderson: Eidos Montreal Cancelled A Telltale-Style Story-Driven Lord Of The Rings Game

In recent years, Eidos Montreal has gone through some genuinely difficult times. The studio took on multiple outsourced projects and cancelled several games — one of which was a Lord of the Rings title.
Respected insider and journalist Tom Henderson reported that Eidos Montreal had been developing a Lord of the Rings card-based game designed as an interactive story-driven drama with an emphasis on choices and their consequences — very much in the style of Telltale Games. However, according to his sources, the project was cancelled and has no chance of revival.
According to Henderson, the game was conceived as a narrative adventure built around cinematic scenes, dialogues, and branching paths where the player’s decisions would directly shape the course of events. But due to mass layoffs and an internal restructuring of priorities at Eidos Montreal, development was halted. The insider emphasized that the studio has no intention of returning to the idea.
Earlier reports revealed that Eidos Montreal had been contracted to work on Hideo Kojima’s horror game OD, but the contract was terminated after the requirement to relocate to Japan. Rumors also claim that the studio is still working on a major open-world title in collaboration with the Shadow of the Tomb Raider team, planned for release in 2026.
