A Veteran Bethesda Developer Explains Why the Fallout Series Worked — And Why Todd Howard Deserves the Credit
The Fallout series will return for its second season next week, and ahead of the premiere Bethesda’s leading developers explained why the adaptation turned out to be so successful. According to design director Emil Pagliarulo, the key factor was a principle decision made by Todd Howard: not allowing Hollywood studios to impose directors associated with “typical” video game adaptations onto the project.
Pagliarulo recalls that proposals to adapt Fallout emerged as far back as ten years ago, but the studio deliberately declined — it did not want the franchise to become yet another weak “based on the game” movie.
He emphasizes that the series has become part of the universe’s canon: its events take place nine years after Fallout 4, in the same wasteland and along the same timeline. But the main reason for its success, he says, is that Bethesda waited for the right partner.
We didn’t want a “video game director.” We wanted the best director, the best showrunner. And until Jonathan Nolan and his team came in with their pitch, we were simply waiting for the right moment.
Pagliarulo notes that Hollywood studios once saw game adaptations as second-tier projects, and only in recent years has the industry learned to treat them as full-scale premium series. That is why Nolan’s arrival — the creator of Westworld and co-author of the Dark Knight trilogy — proved decisive.
He also points out that Fallout has managed to extend far beyond its traditional audience: the show is being watched by people who have never played the games.
It’s amazing to see how the show draws in those who have never played and never intended to. That is what makes it special.
With Amazon already launching production on a third season, confidence in the series is clear — and Bethesda believes that the decision to rely on a strong, author-driven showrunner has fully paid off. Earlier, Todd Howard spoke about how he envisions the future of the game series and about a possible TV series set in the world of The Elder Scrolls.
