Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Stripped of Game of the Year at The Indie Game Awards 2025
The organizers of The Indie Game Awards 2025 have revoked the Game of the Year award from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The reason cited was the use of generative AI in the game's development.
The award has now been passed to the roguelike puzzle game Blue Prince. Additionally, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also lost its Best Debut title, which has been awarded to Sorry We're Closed. According to The Indie Game Awards 2025 organizers, Sandfall Interactive, the game's developer, had affirmed that no AI was used during the game's development when submitting their application. However, it was recently revealed that this was not the case.
It is worth noting that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 set a record for the most wins at The Game Awards, taking home nine awards. Additionally, the game secured three wins at the PS Blog Game of the Year Awards 2025, including Best Story, Best Soundtrack, and Best Independent Game. The project has also been nominated for Game of the Year and Best Soundtrack at The Steam Awards 2025.
