Swen Vincke, head of Larian Studios, believes that players who discovered the studio through Baldur's Gate 3 shouldn’t go back to the earliest entries in the Divinity series. According to him, those games are “clearly outdated by now.”

Vincke noted that the upcoming Divinity will include references spanning the entire history of the world — from Divinity: Original Sin to older titles like Divine Divinity and Divinity: Ego Draconis. However, familiarity with those earlier games is not required.

They were great games in their time, but that was more than twenty years ago. Today, they definitely feel outdated. If you really want to know everything, then yes — there were games before Original Sin. But they’re quite old now.

The earliest entries in the series were released in the early 2000s and differ significantly from modern RPGs, both visually and mechanically. Even the internal chronology of the Divinity universe, as fans admit, remains confusing and doesn’t play a crucial role in understanding the newer games.

In essence, the studio’s position is straightforward: if players are drawn to tactical combat and co-op, they should look at Divinity: Original Sin 2. If their main interest lies in cinematic storytelling in the vein of Baldur’s Gate 3, revisiting the earliest Divinity titles makes sense only out of pure curiosity.

According to fans, the older games today are better appreciated as part of the genre’s history — and as an excuse to revisit the classic soundtracks by Kirill Pokrovsky — rather than as essential entry points into the series.

Vincke also promised that the studio will soon share more details about the new game. An AMA session is planned, where developers will be open to questions on any topic.
