Owlcat Games presented a developer interview for Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy at the New Game Plus Showcase on January 8, 2026. The developers discussed the game’s mechanics and combat system.

In the feature, the team talked about the wide range of tactical options in combat, the investigation system, and the process of creating a deep narrative with numerous characters and factions. According to the executive producer, the game will offer more opportunities for player expression, richer interaction with the environment, a deeper RPG approach, alternatives to combat, and a new morality system.

Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy is a turn-based cRPG set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The player takes on the role of an Inquisition acolyte, investigating heresy in the Calixis Sector. The game is based on the Dark Heresy tabletop role-playing system by Black Industries.

The game was announced in May 2025 during the Warhammer Skulls Showcase. The developers promise a fully reworked gameplay foundation compared to the studio’s previous title Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader — including new combat systems, abilities, progression, and core attributes. The studio also promises full voice acting for dialogues and a smaller-scale but more reactive story with a strong focus on player choice and variability.

Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy is scheduled to release in 2026 on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Previously, the same developers shared new details about an RPG-shooter inspired by Mass Effect.
