A New Divinity Game Will Introduce a Mechanic Never Seen in the Series — And Fans Think They’ve Cracked the Hint

Nick Pechenin, head of design at Larian Studios, has hinted that the next entry in the Divinity franchise will feature a gameplay mechanic that has never appeared in any previous game in the series — nor even in Baldur’s Gate 3. While Pechenin stopped short of confirming anything outright, his wording was so suggestive that fans quickly converged on a single theory.

During a Reddit AMA session, Pechenin was asked which new mechanic in the project he is most proud of. In response, he said that throughout Divinity: Original Sin, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Baldur’s Gate 3, the same omission had always bothered him.

When I was exploring the starting areas of DOS1, DOS2, and BG3, something always felt off to me. It’s actually very obvious once you think about it. In Divinity, I can finally do the thing I wanted to do in all of those previous games.

Players were quick to point out a common detail shared by all the games mentioned: each one begins in a coastal area with large bodies of water that appear explorable — yet the characters are unable to swim. The most upvoted comment under Pechenin’s reply summed up the community’s reaction succinctly: “Swimming confirmed.”

Other users noted that it always felt strange for these games to literally drop the player on a beach while completely ruling out the possibility of venturing into open water. Larian has not officially confirmed the new mechanic, but fans believe the hint is far too obvious to be accidental.
