Leak: Rockstar Court Documents May Have Revealed the Player Count for GTA 6’s Online Mode
The case concerns an ongoing legal dispute in the UK that began after more than 30 employees were laid off, most of them from Rockstar North’s Edinburgh office. All 31 dismissed workers were members of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which filed a lawsuit against the company. Rockstar, in turn, claims the layoffs were caused by leaks of confidential information about unannounced features of the game.
Court materials related to Rockstar Games include a reference to the possible lobby size in the online mode of Grand Theft Auto VI. According to the submitted documents, GTA 6’s multiplayer may be designed for sessions with up to 32 players.
After reviewing the case files, People Make Games reported that internal messages among the laid-off employees mentioned “32 players” in the context of discussing workloads and QA sessions. In the court documents, Rockstar describes these messages as the disclosure of “strictly confidential information,” including the existence of an “unannounced online service” and “a specific number of players planned for it.”
This indirectly suggests that GTA 6’s online mode could indeed launch with 32-player lobbies. For comparison, the current online mode of Grand Theft Auto V supports up to 30 active players and two spectators in a single session. As such, the potential increase would be relatively modest, but still slightly higher than current limits.
In other messages cited in the court materials, one of the dismissed employees noted that a QA session was described as “challenging,” even though it involved only 32 participants — which could point to testing more complex scenarios. At the same time, the documents contain no direct confirmation that Rockstar does not plan to expand the player cap after the online mode launches.
Rockstar Games has not officially commented on the reported lobby size for GTA 6 Online. All information is based solely on interpretations of court documents and has not been confirmed through any company announcements. Previously, the company issued a separate statement regarding the outcome of the first stage of the legal proceedings.
