Cross-Play and Cross-Progression Will Arrive in The Elder Scrolls Online at the Same Time — But Not Before 2027
The developers of The Elder Scrolls Online have confirmed that cross-play and cross-progression will be implemented in the game simultaneously. This was announced by executive producer Susan Kath, who clarified that both features are currently in development, but their launch is not planned for 2026.
We will be implementing cross-play and cross-progression at the same time.
The first official mentions of cross-play for The Elder Scrolls Online appeared in October 2025, when ZeniMax Online Studios confirmed that work on the feature was underway. The topic was recently revisited during a Reddit Q&A session, where the developers explicitly stated that implementing the functionality would take longer than initially expected.
Exact launch dates for cross-play and cross-progression have not been announced, but the earliest current target is 2027. For MMOs, such features remain relatively rare, as unifying players across different platforms into a single ecosystem requires significant technical and infrastructure preparation.
It is still unclear how the system will handle PC mods, whether players will need to repurchase the game and its expansions on different platforms, and how accounts will be managed for players who already have progress across multiple versions of The Elder Scrolls Online.
Previously, ZeniMax Online Studios leadership noted that despite a challenging 2025, the team is looking to the future with optimism. The studio expects that the introduction of cross-play, cross-progression, and an updated roadmap for 2026 will help strengthen the position of the decade-old MMO and expand its audience across different platforms.
