Marathon's designers relied on IKEA's style when developing the game
The designers of Marathon, when working on the game, relied, in particular, on the IKEA style. And even the Nike management would have liked the characters' shoes. This was stated by former art director Joseph Cross.
The design of the game has changed a lot during development. This was evident in one of the last videos, where the authors showed the difference between the alpha and the current version of the project.
Joseph Cross noted that creating a visual style for a project about the future is a special task. Obviously, in hundreds of years, things will not look the same as they do now. In this case, many authors, designing, for example, a box, begin to add banal details.: bevels, seams, and glowing LED screens. Cross is glad he wasn't forced to do something like that.
As a result, a style guide was created from scratch for Marathon designers. One of the important points in it is the weapon. The guns were designed in an industrial style, while visually simplifying them.
"There's something intuitively functional about how they're put together because the artists are very tuned in to form and function and product design".
The developers also turned to bright colors to create a more playful space that contrasts with the concept of a shooter.
"We do risk those comparisons to LEGOs or Roblox, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing. I had IKEA in our style guide because of their incredibly well-designed functional modular furniture, and I think that's a cool thing".
The designer added that the project intentionally does not use screws and bolts to fasten the parts. There will be no rust on the weapon, and very little metal will be added.
Joseph Cross emphasized that he is a fan of sneakers, and special attention was also paid to this element of the image in the game. According to Cross, the shoes of one of the heroines turned out to be so successful that they would look good outside the game.
"So much so I believe a senior designer at Nike or something like that would appreciate those designs. And that's ultimately the goal. I don't want this stuff to be good for a video game. I want it to be good from a design perspective".
Marathon will be released on March 5 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The project can already be pre-ordered in digital services.
