GOG Will Add the Original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to Its Preservation Program After Remake Cancellation
GOG has announced that the original version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will be added to its Preservation Program, an initiative focused on maintaining and enhancing classic games. The company shared the news on January 22 via Twitter, responding to Ubisoft’s decision to cancel the remake.
GOG promised not only to ensure the game’s compatibility with modern systems, but to create what it calls the best possible version of the title. Platform representatives said they intend to invest the necessary effort so the game runs stably and receives quality-of-life improvements for comfortable play on current hardware.
The news about the cancellation of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake may be painful and disappointing for many of us, but it also gives us a chance to celebrate the game where it all began. Not just a classic, but a masterpiece that deserves to shine even brighter.
The original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is already available in GOG’s catalog, but it suffers from technical issues on modern systems. Fans have been addressing these problems through unofficial patches and mods, however official support within the Preservation Program should remove the need for third-party fixes.
Ubisoft officially canceled the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake on January 21, after at least five to six years of development. The publisher stated that the project failed to reach the required quality bar, and that further development would have demanded additional time and investment the company was unwilling to commit.
