Chrono Odyssey Devs Completely Reforge Combat: Movement, Guard Crush, and Potions Overhauled

The developers of Chrono Odyssey have released a new developer diary focused entirely on changes and improvements to the combat system, introduced in response to player feedback from the first closed beta test and reflecting the project’s new direction. All of the listed tweaks are still in development and may be further refined by release.

Controls and responsiveness

One of the main CBT complaints was how “heavy” the character felt, with input delay in movement, jumping, and combat, so the team has revised core movement and control systems:

  • Movement is no longer tied to the camera, allowing the character to move freely in any direction even while the camera is locked on an enemy, making it easier to dodge and control the battlefield.
  • Strafe running lets players quickly move left and right while locked on a target, which is especially useful against AOE attacks and ranged foes.
  • Attack direction now depends on the character’s facing rather than the camera, so strikes land exactly where the character is looking.
  • Sprint now activates instantly: the start-up animation has been removed, and with the run button held, the character will begin sprinting immediately after landing.
  • The automatic roll after jumping has been removed, preventing the character from ending up in unintended positions.

Impact and combat “weight”

To make fights feel more intense and tactile, the team has strengthened both visual and mechanical hit feedback:

  • Hit reactions have been improved so the character visibly responds to getting struck instead of merely trading damage numbers.
  • A Guard Crush system makes blocking consume stamina, and completely drained stamina leaves the character defenseless; attacks from the side or rear break guard instantly regardless of stamina.
  • Enemy attacks now vary in strength: light and heavy blows trigger different Guard Crush animations, knockback distances, and vulnerability windows.
  • Knockback duration has been reduced, and crowd-control systems have been reworked, including the partial removal of full immunity frames on some powerful monsters.

Consumables

Healing and buff items have been restructured as well:

  • Health potions are now a permanent, rechargeable resource mapped to a dedicated button and automatically replenished after death inside instances.
  • Food now provides long-term bonuses such as stat boosts and movement speed rather than instant healing.
  • Special potions grant strong but short-lived effects designed for critical moments in combat.

Other improvements

  • Duels now feature clear arena boundaries and more readable victory and defeat indicators.
  • Thrown items display their flight trajectory before being used.
  • Weapon swaps are accompanied by enhanced visual effects to improve readability during hectic fights.

Chrono Odyssey is being developed as a next-generation action MMORPG on Unreal Engine 5, featuring a large-scale seamless open world, an action-focused combat system that incorporates time manipulation, and deep character and gear customization, and is planned to launch in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
